CARNARVON, CORAL COAST - SMALL ANIMAL
Sick of working long hours in an unsupportive environment?
Is your daily caseload leaving you feel unfulfilled?
Want to escape the ‘churn and burn vet’ wheel that so many are on?
Let me set the scene...
It’s the autumn of 2024 and I am so glad that I took this amazing opportunity 12 months ago.
I had been toying with the idea of moving to the country for a little while, but hadn’t yet taken the leap.
It was a big decision for me, but I trusted my gut!
I wake up to the ocean from my bedroom window in the beachside home (included in my new job!).
I revel in the peacefulness until the call to soak up the outdoors beckons me.
As I lace my shoes, I can see the boats on the water. Walking along the Carnarvon fascine, I feel the light breeze and the warm sunshine on my face.
On returning from my morning walk, with a hot coffee and fresh croissant in hand, I am excited for the day. I know I will be making a difference in so many lives today, a feeling I can’t describe!
I love connecting with my clients and building a fantastic relationship with their pets, and in turn, I feel appreciated.
I am welcomed by my team as I arrive into the clinic and check the schedule for the day. The team has our morning huddle and discuss our ‘wins’, ‘learns’ and ‘intentions’ for the week. The day is mapped out with clarity and I don’t feel overwhelmed with needing to do everything on my own.
As I step into my first consult, my client liaison officer has welcomed my client and patient and discussed preventative care. She has gathered history and I can get down to doing what I do best- diagnosing and treating!
Whilst I am examining my patient, my ‘right hander’ is scripting notes as I dictate. At the end of the consult and after lots of treats, she books the patient in for their next visit and escorts them to reception for handover.
My next case is an interesting one and I enjoy bouncing ideas around with Emma, it’s so much better when you have 2 minds together. We’re able to work out a plan and get started on diagnostics and treatment!
Today, I am keen to jump into surgery. My nurse has already taken bloods and has the patient's meds and fluids set up ready for me to double check. I am confident to sink my teeth into this surgery, knowing that I have backup if anything gets curly.
I am an intelligent, highly qualified veterinarian- but sometimes I forget just how capable I am.
I didn’t need any help with this one and I felt very accomplished when I closed up. My patient recovered well and I know his owners are going to be very pleased with the outcome.
Invoicing my surgery cases is easy as there are templates for procedures, so I don’t need to
start from scratch.
At midday, I sit down to enjoy my lunch. Some days I go for a drive if I choose, to have that mental reset in the middle of the day. The early afternoon is reserved for hospital cases and typing up my notes, so I don’t feel too pressured.
My afternoon consultations went well and I got to cuddle some cute new puppies- food for the
soul!
Before I know it, 4pm rolls around and it is time to head home.
Work life balance is so important at Coral Coast Vets. I get home while it is still daylight every day and have time to go for a drive to the beach in the afternoon.
My market haul from the Saturday courtyard markets has all the fresh produce I need to cook a healthy dinner. I have bought some local seafood from up the road.
Tomorrow is my RDO, I get one every week so I don’t burn out. I am heading up to the blow holes for the day, I may spot a turtle or two, the ocean is good for my soul.
In a few weeks, I am taking one of my annual flights to Perth to catch up with friends and do some shopping. Carnarvon is only a 2 hour flight to Perth.
I’ve been wanting to attend the AVA conference for a while now and I am excited to head down later in the year. I can’t wait to network with colleagues and keep up to date with the latest in medications and treatment advances. This is all part of my package at CCVH and I am supported in any CVE I want to keep up with.
I am able to practice the degree I studied so hard to attain and I am feeling confident and content. I know that I will always be supported and not made to feel silly if I don’t quite get something- that’s how we learn and grow, after all!
I am so glad I gave it a go and made my move to the Gascoyne!
Please click here to see photos!
If you’d like this to be your story in 12 months, take a chance and flick Dr Emma an email emma@coralcoastvet.com.au to learn a little more!

BUNBURY & EATON, SOUTH OF PERTH - SMALL ANIMAL
Small Animal Vet Wanted for Bunbury/ Eaton, Western Australia
Bunbury region is an awesome place to live. It’s on the beach, it’s close to Perth and the Margaret River region. It has all you need from a city with great bars, restaurants, cinemas, etc. If you love sports we have great local facilities (50m indoor heated pool, international standard turf hockey pitches, lots of footy grounds, tennis courts, great surf lifesaving clubs, etc). It’s got it all!
So … you need the right job to enjoy this great area. Here’s what it’s like to work for us:
- 4-day week, plus roughly 1 in 3 or 4 Saturday mornings. We’re closed Saturday afternoons and Sundays so you have time for yourself and/ or time to spend with family & friends. There is the option of part-time, so if you’d rather do fewer days we can make it work.
- Roughly 1 night on call every 2 weeks. We have a payment gateway for our on-call service which means we filter out the non-urgent calls, and you get paid every time you answer the phone (even if you don’t get called in). We are only on call for weeknights – we are not on call on weekends or Public Holidays.
- Great support. The vets all enjoy mentoring and teaching, and with the clinic accepting referrals for ultrasounds, orthopaedic and soft-tissue surgery, oncology, behaviour and dermatology, there is a great opportunity to learn and grow
- CPD is strongly encouraged. Most of our vets have done at least one Sydney Uni Distance Education course, fully paid for by the clinics. We also pay for flights and accommodation for attending conferences. We don’t have a set budget for CPD – if we think you and the clinic will both benefit from something, we’ll pay for it.
- We have the toys you need. DR digital xrays, colour doppler ultrasound, Surgivet monitors, in-house blood machines and recently have added iM3 dental xrays and Vet-Tomes at each clinic
- You get out on time. We have 20-minute appointments as standard (30 minutes for puppy vaccinations, euthanasia, and complex cases) so you have time to work up cases properly. The last appointment for the day is blocked out and only available for sick animals – it means you normally have 20 minutes at the end of the day to finalise notes etc, or if a client calls at 5pm with a sick animal there’s time to see it. It doesn’t need to be squeezed in or added to the end of the day after closing.
- Pay - we have a few commitments to our team about pay:
- Everyone is paid a minimum of 15% above the Award. This includes the entire team – vets, nurses, trainees and animal attendants.
- Vets are well paid and rewarded for their work. Salary range of $75 000 to $110 000, depending on experience.
- Superannuation, After Hours payments & CPD are paid in addition to base rate
- VSB registration fees & radiation licences are paid annually/ tri-annually
- After-hours is well remunerated. Our payment gateway means you get paid to answer the phone after hours (currently $30 per call) while cutting out the non-urgent calls. We pay a generous percentage of the professional fees and you can expect to earn between $150-500/hour for any after-hours work completed (depending on the case).
- Your pay never goes backwards in real terms. At the start of each financial year we increase pays by at least CPI, so even with significant inflation you won’t be left behind.
What are we looking for from a vet?
- A good attitude. We can teach anyone new skills, but we can’t teach a good attitude. We need someone who will get along well with the team and have a positive, can-do approach (we have a great team that works really well together). We encourage our team to remember that there is life outside of work, and being a vet is something that we do, not who we are.
- A desire to learn. There is always so much that is new and exciting in our job. We need to keep learning and growing so we can continue to take the best possible care of our patients.
- Suitable qualifications. Applicant will need a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent qualification) and need to be eligible for registration as a veterinary practitioner in Australia.
That’s about it really. We’re flexible with so many things so we would encourage anyone to apply. If you’re a parent looking to return to clinical work, a burnt-out vet who needs to rediscover a love for the job, a new or recent graduate looking for a supportive practice, or just looking for a sea/tree change, please get in contact.
If this sounds like the sort of place you would like to work - please send a copy of your Resume and a Cover Letter to josie.hobbs@bunburyvets.com.au. Josie is more than happy to have an informal/ confidential chat or to put you in touch with team members at Bunbury & Eaton Veterinary Clinics if you would like to hear from them directly.

About us
Woodvale Park Veterinary Hospital is an independent, small, close-knit team based in north Perth. We are bound by our love of animals and the people who consider them their family. The practice owner comes from an academic and specialist background and thus values continuing education and the highest standards of care.
Our motto is ‘your pets are our pets’ and while this may seem cliché it is how we genuinely feel. Our clients appreciate that we care deeply for their pets and as a result we tend to attract people who are kind, compassionate animal lovers just like us!
Additionally, we uphold a commitment to treating each member of the team with the respect, patience and dignity they deserve and expect the same of any new additions.

Comment from current Staff member :
"I have worked at this clinic since graduating from university at the end of 2019, I am now in my 3rd year out from uni. Since starting here, my skillset has dramatically improved as we have a varied and exciting case load. As our closest referral hospital is over 5 hours away, we have the opportunity to do complex work ups and surgeries and advanced emergency medicine. There is a good mixture of large and small animal work, as we see goats, sheep, alpacas, horses, cows, pocket pets, dogs and cats. Being able to work in a rural setting has been rewarding and you do feel like a vital part of the community. I have been challenged to improve as a vet, however, have always had support and someone to call, no matter the time or day. The team is young, fun and progressive. The nurses are supportive and have excellent skills to assist us vets. The management of the clinic is supportive and constantly finding ways to improve working conditions and equipment for our team. The salary is more than competitive, especially being a rural clinic. I would recommend this clinic as a great workplace for someone who is interested in working in a mixed rural setting with up to date protocols, salaries and equipment" Stacey, current employee
If this sounds like you or we sound like a place you would like to work, please send your cv and cover letter to bataviavet@outlook.com Att Tara. Feel free to email if you have any questions or would like to discuss further! Any enquires will be treated completely confidentially.
