BELCONNEN - SMALL ANIMALS
Have you heard about Capital Paws Veterinary Group in Canberra?
We are a co-operative of locally owned and operated vet practices, with an approach to veterinary life that is totally unique.
We are currently looking for a vet to join our Kippax Veterinary Hospital team (but do look out for ads at our sister practices and consider coming to Canberra with a friend!!) We have recently completed a renovation giving us more space in the clinic and the capacity to expand our hospital to better service the increasing demand for veterinary services.
We are very keen to invite the 2022/2023 New Graduates to apply. We have a large team of experienced vets to support our new graduates and love all the modern concepts that new graduates can introduce to our practice.
We are very excited to now be able to offer a more structured new graduate program. This includes one day rostered off clinics a month to rotate through the clinics upskilling in various areas depending on where the expertise is, new graduate lunch times rounds on a monthly basis with other new and recent graduates in our group and a formalised mentoring program. We will pay above award and also help with some of the initial costs to get started in your career. We work hard to ensure that our organisation is a very safe and supportive place for you to begin what we belief is a wonderful job.
We would of course, welcome anyone with experience to apply as well. We would love to have you contribute your expertise to our clinic as well as develop any other areas of interest that you have. We have the capacity to offer extremely flexible working hours and are happy to consider people looking for either part-time or full time work.
At Capital Paws, we truly value our veterinary colleagues and have built practice teams that are rich with highly engaged, experienced vets who give excellent patient care, whilst enjoying satisfying and rewarding careers. We provide supportive environments for more recent graduates and offer genuine leadership opportunities for senior vets, up to and including partnership.

We currently have eight directors involved with Capital Paws, all of whom live in Canberra and work in our hospitals. Each of us are happy and content in our veterinary work and apart from looking after our patients, our greatest motivation is to provide excellent opportunities for our fellow vets and nurses to thrive in this rewarding vocation.
Each of the nine hospitals in our group has its own unique personality and is run as an individual practice, whilst enjoying the benefits of a broader network of colleagues, equipment, systems, and facilities. We have vets with a wide range of special interests including, behaviour, surgery, imaging, dentistry, exotics, internal medicine (radioactive iodine ward), dermatology, physiotherapy and practice management. These skills are readily shared across the practices and allow for mentorship in just about any area of interest. Outside of clinical support, we also provide guidance when it comes to work/life balance and how to manage stress and anxiety - skills that are so important in our industry.
If you come to work with us, we can cater to your strengths and interests by finding a role that is the right fit for you. Given that each of our practice owners has a family, we are very flexible and understanding when it comes to working around the other commitments you have in life.
In joining us, you become a member of a diverse community of friendly vets with a wide range of clinical and life experience. This has meant that we can have special interest groups in such areas as ultrasonography, medicine, and behaviour, however, also in tennis, trivia, mountain biking, rock climbing, bouldering, netball, bushwalking, skiing, back country snow sports and baking! We have an immediate social and professional network for you to become a part of.
Naturally, we are keen for you to engage in continuing education, which can range from the regular internal sessions that take place over beer and takeaway, through to support for study for memberships and everything in between. In addition to conference fees, we also provide a daily allowance for travel and accommodation.
We use our skills and knowledge to contribute to organisations such as Pets in the Park, Domestic Violence Support, and local animal rescue organisations. We also run our own charitable organisation, “The Canberra Mob”, that provides animal health programs in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. We undertake two NT trips each year and many of our vets and nurses have spent weeks doing desexing and parasite treatment programs in the remote locations that we visit
We believe that what we have to offer is unique in the Australian veterinary landscape. At the moment, we are looking for a vet to join the 50 who currently make up our community. We would love to hear from you to further discuss the opportunity for you to contribute to our team, as we support you to develop your professional and personal interests.
Canberra is a terrific place to live. It is a beautiful city of lakes and natural bushland. We have the best network of walking, running and mountain bike trails in Australia. There are great restaurants and cafes, along with innumerable clubs catering to every lifestyle interest. Many of our vets spend summer weekends at the south coast and winter weekends at the snow, and there is no better place for bringing up kids!

Working at WQVH has been everything I hoped for in my New Graduate job. Whilst being busy and challenged (during the very challenging year of 2020!), I have been supported every step of the way both personally and in my professional development. The hours are very fair and the salary is rewarding. Additionally, I have been able to manage a great work life balance this year, which is not something many Veterinarians can say! As a team, we believe in evidence-based learning and providing exceptional care. We fulfil this ethos by regularly updating our equipment and facilities and having regular staff meetings to improve our protocols. I know I will continue to grow as a Veterinarian and as a person at this practice. WQVH is not just a vet clinic but a fun, supportive community who care tremendously about clients, their pets and anything else that comes through the doors. I would choose WQVH ten times over and recommend it to any new graduate or experienced vet.

Why work in Canberra?
Yes, those primary school trips to Parliament House really did Canberra no favours, but there is a lot more to this place than politicians and Floriade! With all the sunshine (even in the winter) it is a great place to live. We even get an extra two public holidays here each year! Are you a foodie? Email us for a no strings attached care package from Canberra…we’d love to show off our local produce and give you a taste of what you can experience living in our city.
As a new grad vet I was very nervous to start my new job and move to a new city – 4 years on I’m so glad I did! Small Friends has been such a supportive environment, allowing me to grow and learn new techniques with somebody ‘having my back’ if I ever need it. Moving to Canberra from Melbourne has also been great. I love living in Canberra – it has all the benefits of a major city without the traffic and some really gorgeous countryside (and great wineries) just a few minutes drive away! Dr Sally
