ROSEWORTHY, NORTH OF ADELAIDE - SMALL ANIMAL
Veterinarian (General Practice) - Companion Animal Health Centre
Job no: 506142
Work type: Continuing - Full-time
Campus: Roseworthy, Regional South Australia
Categories: Animal & Veterinary Sciences, HEO6, HEO7
Attractive and competitive remuneration package offered including 17% superannuation.
SA Veterinary Registration and Radiation License paid by the employer and consideration will be given for assistance with relocation +/- visa requirements for overseas applicants.
The University’s School of Animal & Veterinary Science is seeking to employ a Veterinarian Clinician in the Companion Animal Health Centre (CAHC) to provide General Practice services and to provide clinical mentoring and guidance to final year veterinary and veterinary technology students.
Whilst this position is aimed at more experienced clinicians, consideration will also be given, at an appropriate level, to new or recent graduates. Any such recent graduates will be provided with a comprehensive training program to help them build into the role.
This position will provide an opportunity to work in a friendly closely-knit team of experienced GP clinicians, supported by specialists and a dedicated team of nursing and support staff. The ECC team provides 24/7 emergency and critical care services for a varied and dynamic caseload of small animal patients and works closely with our general practice veterinarians in delivering a complete service to the local pet-owning community. We maintain an extensive network of referring practices and provide them with both an after-hours service and also hospital monitoring for their critical cases. Working with their enthusiasm to get involved with case management, you will help to educate the new generation of veterinarians.
As you would expect from a Veterinary Surgeons Board accredited hospital, our facilities and equipment are of the highest standard, with on-site ultrasound, X-ray and CT imaging and the support of a dedicated radiographer. Our hospital is supported by the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which is located within the same building. This is often invaluable for fast turnaround of clinical pathology reports and direct contact with pathologists for case discussion.
CAHC forms a part of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and provides a great environment in which to study for your own ANZCVS membership or similar. Further study and continuing professional development activities are encouraged and supported with time off and up to $3,000 per annum available to spend on your choice of CPD. Other benefits include free full access to international journals through the University Library plus VIN membership.
CAHC is located on the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus, and is surrounded by great lifestyle opportunities. To be successful you will need:

- Demonstrated veterinary experience in first opinion general practice but recent graduates will be considered.
- Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients and team members.

Senior Afterhours Veterinarian
- Afterhours work in a new and unique way.
About Pawprints
As part of the Pawprints family, you’ll have the opportunity to work emergency and hospital outside of the corporate stronghold. Pawprint’s model hasn’t been seen in Australia before and hopes to establish a better way for overnight care to be performed.
Pawprints is a people focused business which leads to a different set of values and benefits than what you may have experienced previous. Things like:
- Above award salary, which raises yearly with inflation, so the salary maintains its value overtime.
- Parental leave, sick/carers leave, long service (when we get there!) all accommodated, no questions asked. You need a day off; the business will make it work even at short notice. Religious, personal, even menstrual needs are all things this business will work around to enable you to have a life first, a job second.
- As a developing business, you WILL be rewarded for believing in the vision – long term you will be able to build your perfect job – hours, days, responsibilities.
- A collaborative approach to learning and development, and a self-sustaining method for emergency excellence
- Ability to help develop the company into a place that everyone wants to work.
- At every opportunity the business will support financially CE endeavours.
About This Opportunity
Pawprints is seeking a vet who loves emergency work but doesn’t love the current working methods and bureaucracy that seems to plague the available options.
The company is building so the job description will evolve over time, but initially this position is to be the clinical team lead for the Fri/Sat/Sun overnight shifts as part of a weekend package Pawprints will introduce to their service profile.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provision of high-quality urgent care consultations and hospital service, and leadership to the rest of the team working with you.
- Contribute to daily operations and management of the service and practice good business management.
- Identify and contribute to opportunities for improvement within the hospital.
- Training other staff in the field of emergency and critical care medicine, both veterinarians and nurses/technicians.
- Being a role model of the companies’ values – they are not just words; they are who the company is.
- A willingness to do the small things for a bigger goal – At times to aid their development, the senior will need to be support to the junior, and/or cover the front desk while the nurses do a procedure.
- A commitment to communication skill development as a priority both for client and staff interactions. To create a safe space, we need a deep and empathetic understanding of human behaviour and communications, and Pawprints will help you learn these skills!
This is a full-time, continuing position.
The total package will be negotiated based on individual merits.
About You

About us: We are a well-established and reputable mixed animal practice in the heart of South Australia. We have a fantastic team dedicated to providing exceptional veterinary care for both small and large animals.
Please click here to see photos!
Our client base is genuinely supportive and there is NO ON CALL, yep you read it right- NO ON CALL
Why Join us:
- We place a large emphasis on supporting each other and collaboration within the clinic to foster a positive and supportive work environment. We are also involved out of work in local sports and raising funds for charities such as the Guide Dogs and RUNDIPG.
- We start each week with a catch up and coffee and have regular rounds and huddles throughout the day to streamline our communication.
- We have had several final year Vet students comment on our team moral and ‘that it is the best place they have worked in so far’ which makes us proud of the effort we put in to ensure this is the case.
- We employ people for the long-term and we ensure that they are the correct fit for us by offering a trial period where you can come and see how we roll.
- Several of our staff have been with us for over 10 years and our Vets have a combined 45 years of experience amongst them. We have 4 part-time Vets and 2 full time, allowing flexibility in the roster.
- We are large enough to offer a good variety of work but small enough to have a close knit ‘fun’ team.
- We have all the usual tools for small and large animal work plus a therapeutic laser which is really cool. We offer everything from cat castrates, to TPLO surgery on site and first opinion equine and large animal out in the field.
- You get out and about regularly with planned weekly visits to the Upper North and Yorke Peninsula plus emergency large animal work as it arises.
Basically, it’s pretty much the best job out there- I came as a new graduate in 1997 for 18 months and never left, although my Scottish accent still remains – thank goodness!
What we need from you:
- A confident, can-do attitude with excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues and support staff.
- A commitment to continuous learning and sharing knowledge within the team
- A sense of adventure…..why not find out what mixed practice has to offer within a supportive, fun environment.
- Cake making ability is a bonus but there’s always the local bakery if your skills are not great as we have high standards in this department ☺
Benefits:
- We offer a competitive salary package commensurate with your experience and expertise.
- Position can be full or part-time depending on your needs.
- 4 weeks paid Annual Leave.
- PLUS 1 weeks study/CPD.
- Veterinary Surgeons Board Registration fees and Radiation License paid by us.
