ADELAIDE-BASED, MOBILE PRACTICE, SA - SMALL ANIMAL/EMERGENCY, GRADUATE PROGRAM
New Position
AFTERHOURS SMALL ANIMAL NEW GRAD MENTOR POSITION
Pawprints Afterhours is looking for a new graduate who is keen on the emergency sector. This is a unique position specifically tailored to grow your emergency, hospital, and critical care skill sets.
About us:
You won’t have ever seen anything like Pawprints before!
Pawprints Afterhours is a newly developing company in Adelaide designed specifically to improve outcomes for urgent care level patients. We are a mobile service provider who offers overnight hospital monitoring within the GPs own clinic. Urgent care consults, and emergency triage of critical patients are also part of this package.
A company van which is full of all the tools needed to provide excellent ECC care is our office – please ask about the toys!
About the Role
As a newly starting company Pawprints is looking for an aspiring ECC clinician who is willing to trade cross-pollination work for 1-on-1 mentoring. You and the principal vet would be paired together on all shifts and work together to complete the nights work.
The role is full time and solely afterhours – we only work when the GPs are closed. This will include weekend work as the team grows, and a full weekend afterhours care can be offered to clients. Until then, the work is predominantly ‘as needed’ up to a maximum of 3 nights a week.
Key benefits
- Absolutely no solo work*
- Full 2-year development program covering all the ECC essentials (including communications, blood gas interpretation, and POCUS training)
- Commitment to support CPD – you have something you want to do, we will help you do it!
- Empathetic and supportive teammates – it’s a core value of the company!
- Attractive salary that grows with you.
- Minimal client contact - Our hospital clients are other vets!
- All work is to be performed on rostered time – including training modules! If a meeting must happen outside of rostered time, it will be compensated and advised of well in advance.
*If disaster strikes and the principal is sick/has personal emergency, you would still be expected to handle the hospital patient we were called out for. There would be no consults that night, and the nurse in your team would also be with you.
About You
Pawprints is looking for:
- Recent or just graduated veterinarian (registerable in SA)
- A keen interest in Emergency and Critical Care work.
- Someone personally aligned with Pawprints Core Values (Continuous Positive Regard, Patient First, Integrity, Excellence, Continuous Improvement)
- A willingness to do the small things for a bigger goal – at times you will be acting as the principal’s support staff, but other times she will be doing it for you!
- Understanding that small teams mean ALL work is for everyone to complete.
- A person who embraces human diversity and all the weirdness that comes with it – we are committed to being a neurodiverse/mental health safe space.
- A commitment to communication skill development as a priority both for client and staff interactions. To create a safe space, we need a deep and empathetic understanding of human behaviour and communications, and Pawprints will help you learn these skills!

Dr Guy Yates is the head of the Surgery department. Guy is an experienced specialist small animal surgeon and Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, who maintains active clinical interests in soft tissue, orthopaedic and neurosurgery. We see a wide range of orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurologic and oncologic surgery and are equipped with arthroscopy, digital radiography, IMEX linear and circular external fixation systems, TPLO equipment, Biomedtrix Universal Total Hip system, plating systems (Synthes LCP and Kyon ALPS II), Interlocking Nails, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy units, Electrosurgery (monopolar, bipolar, Ligasure), neurosurgery equipment, as well as a CT scanner and access to high-field MRI.
Your New Role
The Surgery department is currently staffed by 2 Specialist Surgeons (Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists), one surgical Registrar, a surgical Resident, and one surgical Intern, and a large team of highly skilled surgical nurses. The role encompasses assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management and patient discharges, assisting the nurses with anaesthesia, and assisting with post-operative care of patients. Interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The commencement of the program is currently flexible, ideally prior to January 2023.
The surgery intern's responsibilities and activities support the efficient and effective management of cases presented to the Surgery Department both as primary referrals and via the emergency service. In this role, the intern works cooperatively with, and under supervision of the surgical specialists, registrar and resident. This affords a considerable opportunity for clinical and professional development with exposure to a wide range of surgical cases and is intended to foster the intern's interest in further learning and facilitate their progression to advanced clinical training in the discipline. This will require a balanced approach to capitalising on learning opportunities and attendance to clinical duties, requiring initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm in both aspects of this role.
Specifically, the regular duties of the surgery intern include:
- Assistance with admission of patients to, and discharge from, the hospital
- Organisation and preparation for anaesthesia of surgical patients
- Induction of anaesthesia and supervision of anaesthetic monitoring by surgical nurses
- Providing assistance to, and guidance of, the surgical nurses in the preparation of patients for surgery and performing adjunctive analgesic procedures
- Scrubbed assistance in surgery
- Supervision and management of patient recovery, as monitored by the surgical nurse
- Review of patient treatment/hospital charts
- Brief evening rounds with the responsible ICU clinician to transfer case responsibility overnight
- Assistance with diagnostic imaging investigations including radiographs, CT and MRI (external facility) examinations after appropriate training and licensing requirements have been met
- Preparation of surgical reports relating to procedures that the intern has been involved in as the assistant surge
- Thorough examination, assessment and care of any hospitalised surgery patients (including cooperation with the surgery nurse in performing any ancillary tasks).
- Preparation of daily inpatient records for hospitalised surgery patients
- Timely and comprehensive reporting to the specialists on the condition of their inpatients.
- Communication with clients and referring veterinarians on behalf of the surgeons when requested.
- The surgical intern is not required to contribute to the on-call roster although there is the potential for the intern to participate in rostered in-patient care on Saturday mornings.
- Participation in, and contribution to, weekly surgery rounds/journal club sessions
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria and have excellent communication skills and work ethic, as well as a strong knowledge base on which to build
- Clinical experience is desirable but not essential
- This position is suited to a highly motivated vet seeking to further their skills and knowledge in Small Animal Surgery
- Team coherence is extremely important to us and above all, we value someone who is a team player and an active learner
What We Offer
- Mentorship and Guidance: Our team of skilled surgeons, vets and nurses will provide mentorship and guidance throughout your internship, ensuring your professional development and continued success. Interns interested in pursuing specialisation will be encouraged to seek residency training following the completion of the internship, and will be assisted in such training opportunities, whether it be internally or externally.
- Diverse Case Load: Our hospital sees a wide variety of cases from the Emergency department as well as referrals from referring practices all over Victoria, NSW and Tasmania, offering you exposure to complex surgical procedures.
- Collaborative Environment: Join a supportive team of passionate professionals who are dedicated to providing the best care for our patients. Learn from experienced nurses, veterinarians and specialists who will guide you every step of the way.
- Professional Development: Take advantage of our comprehensive internal continuing education program, which includes regular seminars, journal club, workshops, and case
- Work-Life Balance: Although emergencies can be unpredictable, we believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Our flexible scheduling ensures you have time to relax and recharge, so you can continue to provide exceptional care. The position includes 4 weeks of annual leave and 1 week of study leave.
- Location: Melbourne is a vibrant city with exceptional access to cultural events and sporting events, fine-dining and is being well positioned to allow the enjoyment of the natural beauty of Victoria.

BRISBANE - DERMATOLOGY INTERNSHIP 2024 - 2025
Dermatology for Animals – Internship programme 2024-25
Established in 1998, Dermatology for Animals provides the veterinary dermatology service within the majority of specialist multi-disciplinary veterinary hospitals in Queensland, as well as providing dermatology referral services to regional centres in Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales. We are now inviting applications for our 2024 intake, with one position available to start in February and another in August. Interns are appointed for an eighteen-month period and are based in south-east Queensland.
Our interns work alongside our specialists, registrars and residents with the aim of providing incumbents with an in-depth understanding of veterinary dermatological skin disease and treatment. Primary case responsibility is not a feature of these positions. The knowledge gained during an internship will be applicable to those seeking to pursue further studies in veterinary dermatology (eg – pursuing residency training with a view to specialisation), and also to those wishing to gain a solid grounding in a discipline that forms approximately 30% of all non-preventative general practice accessions.
Veterinary dermatology is unique amongst referral disciplines in fostering long-term relationships with clients and patients. It's less about fixing our patients and sending them on their way, and more about managing their issues so that they and their owners can live their best lives. It's also unique in that dermatology rarely presents with genuine emergencies, and this allows us all to have an enviable work-life balance.
WHAT WE OFFER
- The opportunity to work with internationally renowned leaders in veterinary dermatology.
- Training in dermatology specific diagnostic techniques including intradermal allergy testing.
- Training in the use of cutting-edge technology including:
- CO2 and diode lasers.
- MRI and CT.
- Video-otoscopy.
- The ability to hone your communication skills through client communication in person, on the telephone and via email.
- No out of hours work. We do work on Saturdays but provide a weekday off in lieu.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
- An enthusiasm for learning, and an understanding that there's still a lot we don't know.
- The flexibility to move from one aspect of the role to another, and then back again.
- Excellent communication skills to enhance our reputation with clients and referring vets alike.
- A clean driving licence as travel to various centres in south-east Queensland is required.
If you think you might be interested in veterinary dermatology as a career, or just wish to hone your skills in this important discipline, then an internship with Dermatology for Animals may be what you're looking for. If you would like to explore the opportunities further, please email your application, including a letter of intent and your current CV to:
