Ascot Equine Veterinarians is seeking motivated new or recent graduate veterinarians to join the team. We are a youthful group of veterinarians, with a progressive attitude to providing high quality equine veterinary services to the Greater Perth region. Three boarded veterinary specialists, one in large animal internal medicine and two in equine surgery, support our team of experienced associate veterinarians in providing first opinion and referral veterinary services to the WA equine community.

The key purpose of the role is to prepare interns for a future career in a high standard equine general practice or for entry into a residency program. This is a valuable training opportunity to work under specialists in a hospital environment and acquire clinical training and experience in all aspects of equine veterinary diagnosis and care.

Our case load is large and varied, servicing a significant thoroughbred racehorse and stud farm population, along with an ever-increasing number of performance, pleasure, and companion horses. Our Equine Veterinary Hospital and Diagnostic Centre offers full surgical services and seasonal neonatal intensive care services. Our extensive range of equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, a range of endoscopes (including gastroscope and overground endoscope), arthroscopy, laparoscopy, shockwave, motorised dentistry, telemetric ECG, and in-house laboratory services.
During the term of the internship, the intern will receive experience in the fields of surgery, anaesthesia, internal medicine, sports medicine, dentistry, ophthalmology, and diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasonography and endoscopy). The program also includes time allocated gaining experience in stud medicine, yearling radiography and reproductive work during the breeding season. During the term of the internship, it is expected that interns will develop a case report, or case series, suitable for presentation at a conference or inclusion in a publication.
A veterinary degree registrable in Western Australia is required.

The 12-month postgraduate trainee program is a year‐long, advanced clinical training program in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University in Western Australia. The training program offers clinical experience in specific disciplines and an opportunity to gain formal scholarly training through concurrent enrolment in a graduate program. These positions would suit a recent graduate veterinarian interested in further university training and upskilling in areas that would be relevant to general practice, or a steppingstone to further clinical training such as a residency. Exceptional new graduates will be considered. An annual stipend of $40k is offered with concurrent enrolment in the graduate program which results in award of a Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Studies after completion of 2 semesters. Applicants must be able to start the program in early to mid-January for a Semester 1, 2025 enrolment.

The Role

The Detail
Southpaws is home to an esteemed Surgical Department recognised globally for its expertise and comprehensive caseload in Melbourne. Our surgical team is distinguished not only for its excellence in theaters but also for its significant contributions to medical education and training, both domestically and internationally. We specialise in a range of complex procedures including advanced soft tissue, neurologic, oncologic, and orthopaedic surgeries. Our capabilities encompass Total Hip Replacement and joint resurfacing, laparoscopic interventions, fluoroscopy-guided fracture repair, and transvenous coil embolisation for Porto-systemic shunts.
Supporting our Surgical and Emergency Departments are board certified anaesthetists providing continuous coverage throughout the week across our various locations. Their expertise ensures optimal care for our patients through individualised anaesthestic protocols and ultrasound guided loco-regional anaesthesia for most surgeries.
As a rotating intern you will have the opportunity to work in our busy 24/7 emergency department allowing you hands-on experience in triage, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of emergencies in small animals. You will work alongside an experienced and supportive team of vets and nurses who will help you develop your technical skills and foster your growth as a veterinary professional in a fast-paced environment. You will have exposure to point of care testing that facilitates rapid diagnosis in emergency situations. Alongside technical skills emergency medicine teaches adaptability, flexibility and allows you to make meaningful impacts in the lives of animals and their families in times of crisis.

The Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre (MVSC) is a multi-disciplinary specialist veterinary centre providing services to referring veterinary practices within Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria from two locations (Glen Waverley and Essendon Fields).
Our surgical department is seeking a motivated and passionate veterinarian to fulfill a 12 month internship role. The successful candidate will provide high quality patient care and work closely with our surgical specialists - Drs Wasik and Polak and our fantastic team of dedicated and experienced nurses.
Job Description
This exciting opportunity will provide the successful candidate with extensive exposure and preliminary training in all areas of Small Animal Surgery. The position would be well suited to candidates who wish to continue further surgical training or complete a surgical residency in the future. Previous work experience in a specialist or emergency hospital would be advantageous, however potential candidates with experience in general practice with a keen interest in small animal surgery are also encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a recognised Veterinary degree in Australia and be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria, have excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge base on which to build. Applicants must also be eligible to work in Australia.

The Surgery Internship
You will be mentored for a 12 month period, assisting a team of 6 Specialist Surgeons, 2 Registrars and 2 Residents with diagnosis, surgical treatment, and post operative care of surgical patients. You’ll be exposed to a broad range of Orthopaedic and Soft tissue cases. The surgery department is well resourced with state-of-the-art kit and 6 theatres. Imaging is of the highest standard with digital radiology, MRI, CT scanner, Xray and Ultrasound all readily available. You will be further supported by the largest on-site radiology and anaesthesia teams in the country. Our sports medicine and rehabilitation department has also rapidly expanded. You will work closely with 2 Registrars, as well as a number of rehabilitation therapists, assisting with access to laser and hydrotherapy tank treatments.
The internship has been structured to prepare you for a residency in small animal surgery. The program will run for 12 months, with the option of extending to 18 months if appropriate. This allows you adequate time to complete guided project(s) in the hospital’s clinical research areas. The findings of such research will be presented at a scientific meeting and published in a peer-reviewed journal. You will play a pivotal role in daily rounds and client communication. Assistance in preparation towards membership of the ANZCVS is also available.

The Internal Medicine Residency Position:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Vet with a keen interest in Small Animal Internal Medicine who is ready to commit to our Residency training program. You will join resident mates who are currently in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year, providing you with a very supported start to your program. You will assist our Internal Medicine team with case management, client communication, procedures, diagnostic imaging and much more! This position is a structured learning opportunity with resident rounds, journal clubs, daily team rounds and study leave to ensure you complete the program successfully and pass your exams. You will be further supported by the extensive broader team across Radiation Oncology, Medical oncology, Cardiology and Ophthalmology.
This 3 year 3 month, full-time position will involve being mentored by our large, dedicated team of medical specialists. You will also contribute to publications of the service and conduct a brief clinical research project for publication. This is the only AVCIM program currently being offered, so don’t miss this opportunity.

Job Description
Your New Role
The Surgery department is currently staffed by 2 Specialist Surgeons (Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists), one surgical Registrar, a surgical Resident, and one surgical Intern, and a large team of highly skilled surgical nurses. The role encompasses assisting the surgeons with consultations, diagnostic procedures, surgical procedures, case management and patient discharges, assisting the nurses with anaesthesia, and assisting with post-operative care of patients. Interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The commencement of the program is currently flexible, ideally prior to January 2025.
The surgery intern’s responsibilities and activities support the efficient and effective management of cases presented to the Surgery Department both as primary referrals and via the emergency service. In this role, the intern works cooperatively with, and under supervision of the surgical specialists, registrar and resident. This affords a considerable opportunity for clinical and professional development with exposure to a wide range of surgical cases and is intended to foster the intern’s interest in further learning and facilitate their progression to advanced clinical training in the discipline. This will require a balanced approach to capitalising on learning opportunities and attendance to clinical duties, requiring initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm in both aspects of this role.
Specifically, the regular duties of the surgery intern include:
- Assistance with admission of patients to, and discharge from, the hospital
- Organisation and preparation for anaesthesia of surgical patients
- Induction of anaesthesia and supervision of anaesthetic monitoring by surgical nurses
- Providing assistance to, and guidance of, the surgical nurses in the preparation of patients for surgery and performing adjunctive analgesic procedures
- Scrubbed assistance in surgery
- Supervision and management of patient recovery, as monitored by the surgical nurse
- Review of patient treatment/hospital charts
- Brief evening rounds with the responsible ICU clinician to transfer case responsibility overnight
- Assistance with diagnostic imaging investigations including radiographs, CT and MRI (external facility) examinations after appropriate training and licensing requirements have been met
- Preparation of surgical reports relating to procedures that the intern has been involved in as the assistant surge
- Thorough examination, assessment and care of any hospitalised surgery patients (including cooperation with the surgery nurse in performing any ancillary tasks).
- Preparation of daily inpatient records for hospitalised surgery patients
- Timely and comprehensive reporting to the specialists on the condition of their inpatients.
- Communication with clients and referring veterinarians on behalf of the surgeons when requested.
- The surgical intern is not required to contribute to the on-call roster although there is the potential for the intern to participate in rostered in-patient care on Saturday mornings.
- Participation in, and contribution to, weekly surgery rounds/journal club sessions
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria and have excellent communication skills and work ethic, as well as a strong knowledge base on which to build
- Clinical experience is desirable but not essential
- This position is suited to a highly motivated vet seeking to further their skills and knowledge in Small Animal Surgery

About the GARS Surgery Service
The surgical department consists of five surgical specialists with a team of residents, interns and nurses who are supported by specialists in imaging, medicine, oncology and critical care to provide stellar patient care.
Our three operating theatres are truly enviable, overlooking the neighbouring golf course with each fully equipped with endoscopic towers, mono/bipolar electrocautery, suction and Bipolar Vessel Sealing Devices. Two of the theatres also have electric fluoroscopic tables to facilitate minimally invasive image guided neurologic, orthopaedic and interventional radiology procedures. We have multiple locking plate systems (LCP, SOP, Fixin) in all sizes from 1.5 to 4.5mm plus a complete speciality plate range (DPO, SHO, PCA, PanTA, ParTA, supracondylar etc). We also have Biomedtrix iLoc Interlocking nail system, IMEX circular and linear ESF in all sizes.
As Victoria’s leading joint replacement and resurfacing centre, we are the only site equipped and performing Biomedtrix THR (nano, micro, standard, giant and lateral bolt systems), Biomedtrix Total Elbow Replacement, Arthrex CUE, SynACART and Kyon PGR.
For soft tissue procedures, we have a comprehensive range of laparoscopic and thoracoscopic equipment plus all the staplers, Norfolk (Sub, AUS) and Infiniti (IH PSS) interventional radiology equipment and implants. For neurosurgery, we have Stryker electric neurosurgical systems and a comprehensive range of instrumentation. - The surgery internship is designed to ensure you develop a deeper level of knowledge and competence in all areas of small animal surgery by the completion of the program.
- Mentorship, training, support, and guidance provided by a dynamic group of Specialists (Surgery, Internal Medicine, Imaging, Oncology and Emergency and Critical Care) and a supportive team of nursing staff.
- Involvement in daily hospital and medicine rounds, in-clinic tutorials and journal club
- Mentorship and support for interns to pursue ANZCVS membership (if not already completed) and develop research projects is supported and encouraged.
- Continuing education support, including attendance at conferences is supported and encouraged.
- Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS, MARS and external institutions.

About Us:
GARS is a multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital staffed 24/7. Onsite specialists in surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, diagnostic imaging, oncology and anaesthesia are supported by residents, department specific interns, reception and nursing staff.
The GARS vision is to be Victoria’s leading referral centre. We have recruited staff with a view to achieving this goal. The hospital is brand new, purpose built, proudly independent and privately-owned. Located in Newtown Geelong, the hospital occupies a tranquil part of the city, immediately surrounded by beautiful greenspaces, overlooking the Barwon River, Balyang sanctuary and Balyang Golf course. Position details
- Rotating internship, gaining valuable clinical experience in surgery, internal medicine, ECC and diagnostic imaging over a 12-month period

Pay and Conditions
- This is a salaried full-time position based on a 4-day working week. Some of these days will be on weekends. In addition to this, interns will provide after-hours support on a rotational basis.
- Regular working hours are 8am-6pm, however reasonable flexibility to work beyond those hours on a given day is required if clinical responsibilities dictate this.
- Annual leave, personal/carer’s leave, parental leave, compassionate leave and community service leave will accrue and be provided in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009.
- Some mobile work may be required in the GARS mobile service and our sister business Melbourne Animal Referral Services (MARS).
- Superannuation paid additional to salary package at 11.0%
- CPD allowance is 2% of base wage
- Radiation Licence expense covered during employment.

The internship:

Typical day-to-day tasks include, but not limited to:

- Preparing clinical records, including patient assessments and discharge letters.
- Engaging in tutorials and case discussions to further your learning.
