Requirements of the applicant:

About Us
The Victorian Equine Group operates Bendigo Equine Hospital and several satellite locations in Victoria. The Hospital was established in 2012 and is both a first opinion and referral hospital servicing clients from across Victoria. We operate with a team of 10-13 vets, depending on the season. Our team is highly skilled and features both surgical and reproductive specialists, ambulatory and hospital-based clinicians. The practice services a number of studs in the area so many neonatal foals and stud related cases are hospitalised in Bendigo.

About You
We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable individual with interest in equine medicine. You should be able to work as part of a team and have excellent communication skills.

Your primary responsibility will be the day-to-day care of hospital cases under the supervision of a senior veterinarian. This will include intensive neonatal care, anaesthesia and post operative monitoring of surgical cases. You will also be involved in general practice with cases ranging from lameness investigations, colic work ups, breeding mares and medical patients. Our case load is variable including commercial and pleasure horses. You will gain considerable experience in all aspects of equine veterinary medicine.

New graduates and those with some experience in mixed animal or first opinion equine practices are encouraged to apply.

You will participate in an equally shared “Out of hours hospital roster” which is a maximum of 1 in 3 weeknights and weekends in the breeding season.

Skills you will learn during the internship include

Placing nerve blocks and performing joint injections (including pressure testing joints near wounds)
Taking and interpreting radiographs (feet, fetlocks, knees, hocks, stifles, backs)
Ultrasound of abdomens, chests, and tendons.
Anaesthetising horses – both in a field setting and on gaseous anaesthetic
Reproductive Scanning
Workup and management of compromised neonatal foals
Workup and management of colics
Castrations

A DAY IN THE LIFE FROM A 2025 INTERN

7:00AM: Morning treatments. One horse has shredded his bandage and is proudly wearing the remnants. The dummy foal is now standing (yay!) but has wrapped his fluid line around his body like a tourniquet.

8:15AM: Rounds with the senior vets. I nod along like I fully understand what is being said. I do not but am happy to learn as much as I can. No question is too small here, and the team encourages curiosity—which is good, because I have a lot of questions.

9:00AM: Procedure time. Could be nerve blocks and x-rays for a lameness, could be a colic workup, maybe even foal exam. I am assisting, learning, and occasionally pretending I know what structure the senior vet is pointing at. Bonus points if I do.

12:30PM: Lunch! Or it would be, if two emergencies had not shown up at the same time as a senior vet needs help with a prepurchase exam x-raying everything but the kitchen sink. Perform an abdominocentesis for the first time and get fluid!

1:30PM: Discharge the colic surgery from the weekend prior, owner hands me the box of chocolates as a thank you; contemplate hiding them from the rest of the team. Decide to share them after surgically extracting my favourites.

3:00PM: Finally sit down for lunch. Begin paperwork. Remember I hate paperwork. Paperwork senses this and multiplies.

4:00PM: Afternoon treatments. The Houdini in Box 1 has somehow tied himself in knots with his fluid line. A horse in the paddock doesn’t want to be caught and is doing laps like it is the Melbourne Cup. I’ve lost my stethoscope and can’t find a pen.

6:00PM: Technically off the clock, but my brain is still on. The on-call phone rings as I’m about to leave and my soul briefly exits my body. Thankfully, I am not required. I live to fight another day. Tired? Definitely. Still love it? Absolutely.

Ok, real talk: Yes, this is satire. Yes, the days are long, and the horses have a sixth sense for testing your mental stability. But also, there is nothing quite like learning from a team that supports you, growing more confident each week, and knowing you are doing work that really matters. If you are thinking about applying, do it. You will work hard, you will laugh often, and you absolutely will not regret it.

About Us:
GARS is a multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital staffed 24/7. Onsite specialists in surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care and diagnostic imaging are supported by residents, department specific interns, reception and nursing staff.

The GARS vision is to be Victoria’s leading referral centre. We have recruited staff with a view to achieving this goal. The hospital is brand new, purpose built, proudly independent and privately-owned. Located in Newtown Geelong, the hospital occupies a tranquil part of the city, immediately surrounded by beautiful greenspaces, overlooking the Barwon River, Balyang sanctuary and Balyang Golf course. The facility boasts its own private outdoor space with lawns overlooking the golf course and river for our staff and patients to enjoy.

The hospital and its equipment are state of the art with onsite MRI, CT, Fluoroscopy, Endoscopy, Ultrasound, DR radiography, multiparameter patient monitoring, ventilators, oxygen cages, blood gas, coagulation, haematology and biochemistry machines and a full suite of surgical and medical instrumentation.

Our staff are considered experts in their field and industry leaders. We are completely focused on our team, including every current and future member. GARS is very fortunate to have the Barwon River, Balyang Golf Course and Balyang Sanctuary with their natural green spaces, including bike and walking paths right on our front doorstep. The popular cafes, restaurants and bars of Pakington street and Geelong CBD are only minutes away. The outstanding wineries and distilleries of the Bellarine peninsula and beautiful beaches of the Surf Coast and famous Great Ocean Road Greater are less than 25minutes away. Transport links are excellent, with the South Geelong train station less than 3kms from the hospital, the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry and Avalon International Airport 15 and 25 minutes from the hospital. Position details

Rotating internship, gaining valuable clinical experience in surgery, internal medicine, ECC and diagnostic imaging over a 12-month period
Mentorship, training, support and guidance provided by a dynamic group of specialists and a supportive team of nursing staff.
Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS and external institutions.

Seek guidance from senior staff and the nursing team where appropriate

Achieve and maintain amicable relationships with staff from referring practices.

About You
You will have the following:

Registered as a veterinarian in Victoria
General practice experience desirable but not essential, i.e. we will consider new graduates.
Passion for delivering the highest standard of care
Eagerness to have primary case responsibility.
Ability to work as part of a team
Excellent communication skills
Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for high caseload
Effective time management and organisational skills
Commitment to lifelong learning and continuing education
Commitment to the culture and values of the business

Pay and Conditions

This is a salaried full-time position based on a 4-day working week. Some of these days will be on weekends. In addition to this, interns will provide after-hours support on a rotational basis.
Regular working hours are 8am-6pm, however reasonable flexibility to work beyond those hours on a given day is required if clinical responsibilities dictate this.
Annual leave, personal/carer’s leave, parental leave, compassionate leave and community service leave will accrue and be provided in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009.
Some mobile work may be required in the GARS mobile service and our sister business Melbourne Animal Referral Services (MARS).
Superannuation paid additional to salary package at 12.0%
CPD allowance is 2% of base wage
Radiation Licence expense covered during employment.

Veterinary Graduate Development Program

Applications are now open for the Animal Referral and Emergency Centre's Graduate Development Program - a 12-month, full-time role, designed especially for new and recent graduates. This is a fully supported position where you'll be encouraged to grow, build confidence, and develop the clinical skills you need to become a capable and compassionate ECC veterinarian. You'll be learning alongside experienced mentors in a collaborative, structured environment that's built to help you thrive.

The Animal Referral and Emergency Centre (AREC) was established in 2004 and remains proudly privately owned and operated. Our emergency hospital is led by respected emergency veterinarian Dr David Tabrett, who continues to work hands-on within the business today.

The role

You will be supported by a dedicated team leader who ensures targeted growth throughout the graduate program. Our team leader support model allows us to provide one-on-one clinical and personal support.

The AREC Veterinary Graduate Development Program includes:

Improve International ECC Course Registration (cost of $4,650 covered by us)
Rounds and tutorials
Wet labs: hands-on practice in procedures and surgeries such as chest tube and feeding tube placement, tracheostomy, splenectomy, enterotomy, gastropexy.
Surgery days at a local general practice to develop experience in routine surgeries such as spays
RECOVER certified CPR training
Ultrasound training
Ventilator training
Endoscopy training
Mental Health First Aid training
Communication skills training
Fear Free Training

In addition to our structured graduate program, we create tailored learning and development plans based on your individual goals. You'll work alongside our team of senior ECC veterinarians, managing a broad mix of primary consultations, hospital cases, procedures and surgeries. Located in the Hunter region, our hospital sees a diverse and high caseload of emergency presentations - giving you excellent hands-on exposure and a strong foundation in emergency and critical care.
