Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland. We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood. Position Summary

Our Internship Program offers veterinarians the opportunity to develop clinical skills in a busy specialist and emergency hospital environment. This structured training role provides hands-on experience, close mentorship, and exposure to a wide variety of medical, surgical, and emergency cases.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside specialist veterinarians, emergency clinicians, and experienced nurses, gaining confidence in clinical decision-making, case management, and patient care in a supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Participate in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of hospitalised and emergency patients under supervision.
Assist with medical and surgical case workups, procedures, and patient management.
Perform clinical procedures, both routine and advanced (under guidance).
Participate in emergency and critical care case management.
Assist in anaesthesia, perioperative and post operative patient care.
Maintain accurate and timely medical records and clinical notes.
Attend and contribute to ward rounds, case discussions, and teaching sessions.
Communicate professionally with nursing staff, clinicians, and clients under guidance.
Develop clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through structured supervision and feedback.
Adhere to hospital protocols, clinical standards, and professional requirements at all times.

The role

MELBOURNE - REFERRAL HOSPITAL - ROTATING INTERNSHIP 2027 New Position

**ROTATING INTERNSHIP POSITION AVAILABLE**
Metropolitan Melbourne, VICTORIA

Advanced Vetcare Kensington is a 24hr Emergency and Specialist Animal Hospital situated in central Melbourne. We also have two branch clinics in Geelong and Kew. A 12 month position (54 weeks) is available to a suitable applicant as a rotating intern starting in Jan 2027. The specialist team consists of six specialist surgeons, two internal medicine specialists, and two oncologists. The specialist team is supported by registrars, residents, interns and a full experienced ICU team and nursing support. The position would mainly be based in Kensington and Kew.

The rotations would involve three months in each of the following departments:

Surgery
Internal medicine
Oncology
Emergency

At the end of the 12 months you may have the option to move into a specialist internship.

During these 12 months, a successful applicant will:

Participate and present in grand rounds discussing advances in veterinary medicine
Participate in journal club with residents, registrars and specialists (surgery, oncology, medicine)
Scrub into a large number of orthopaedic, soft tissue and neurological surgeries at our three hospitals
See primary cases through our emergency department and learn to perform common emergency procedures
Assist in medical procedures including endoscopy, ultrasounds, and case management of medical patients
Assist in staging and treatment of oncology patients including advanced imaging, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy
Continue further education to develop their knowledge with access to Vetbloom online course material provided
Participate in intern-specific tutorials for emergency procedures
Have access to our Employee Assistance Program to support their mental health

Our centres are well-equipped modern hospitals with in-house clinical pathology, digital radiography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, endoscopy and 64-slice CT at each branch. Position details

Mentorship, training, support and guidance provided by a dynamic group of Specialists and a supportive team of residents, interns and nursing staff.
The diagnostic imaging intern is expected to take a lead role in ensuring high quality images are acquired, with support from senior imaging staff. This includes acquisition of radiographs, videofluoroscopy, CT and MRI studies, ultrasound guided aspirate of lesions.
Act as Radiation Safety officer and ensure safe radiation practices are observed
Focus on efficient coordination of cases through the Service, attention to detail in terms of image acquisition protocols and quality assurance
Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS and external institutions.

The Residency Program

This program will see you actively involved in providing all aspects of patient care across both our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) departments under the supervision of our team of Critical Care Specialists. You will have primary case responsibility with clinical time split between primary inpatient management of cases in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and shifts in the Emergency Room (ER).

You will be responsible for professional client and referring veterinarian communication and maintenance of a high-quality medical record for your cases, while additionally providing support to Emergency clinicians, and Specialty Interns in the Emergency room.

As part of a 24/7 service, residents participate in a rotating roster that includes days, evenings, occasional nights, weekends, and public holidays.

This is a 36-month, ACVECC-approved program, designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and experience to become an ACVECC, board-certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist, and successfully pass the certifying exam.

Teaching, Mentorship and Research

Dedicated mentorship from an assigned Critical Care Specialist, with ongoing support from the entire Critical Care team
Work under the direct supervision of a Criticalist for 100% of your Critical Care rotations, and roughly 50% of your Emergency department rotations
Three hours of protected learning and teaching time each week, including ECC-specific board review and journal club sessions
Regular multidisciplinary education, including Morbidity and Mortality rounds
Opportunities and support to complete the research and publication requirements as part of ACVECC guidelines (original prospective research, retrospective, and/or case report)
One week of Continuing Education leave and an annual travel stipend to support conference attendance

The Internship:

The Opportunity

As our Internal Medicine Intern, you'll work closely with our specialist team, gaining hands-on experience and assisting with a diverse referral medicine caseload.

This 12-month internship offers mentorship, and the opportunity to prepare for ANZCVS Membership examinations while building a strong foundation for future specialist training.

Anaesthesia Internship Program 2027

Are you interested in anaesthesia & analgesia? An anaesthesia internship is a great way to further your anaesthesia skills and see what referral practice is all about.

Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (WAVES) Intern training program is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated veterinarian who is passionate about anaesthesia and analgesia.

This opportunity will provide you the setting to develop your knowledge base and technical abilities under the support and guidance of two American Boarded Specialist Veterinary Anaesthetists. Both recent graduates and more experienced veterinarians are encouraged to apply. This position would also be suitable for a veterinarian who is intending to obtain further training prior to attempting Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Memberships in Anaesthesia and Analgesia. It is also a solid grounding for those intending to apply for a residency position in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, with three previous interns now in residency training programs.

WAVES is a multi-disciplinary small animal hospital offering a broad range of veterinary referral services including internal medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, imaging, dermatology, dentistry, and emergency. We have all the equipment you would expect for a referral practice and experienced nursing teams, and give the assurance of exceptional care to all our patients. Whilst the program is primarily in the field of Anaesthesia, as part of the program you will have the opportunity to undertake short rotations in emergency and critical care to develop skills in management of patients with emergent problems or are critically ill.

Requirements

Must be a qualified veterinarian who is eligible for registration in the state of Western Australia.
Candidates must have a mature approach to veterinary care and excellent communication skills.

About the role

This full-time, 12-month internship offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in clinical oncology, develop your clinical skills and build a strong foundation for future specialist training. You’ll be involved in:

Oncology case workup, diagnostic investigations and staging.
Treatment planning and ongoing case management.
Chemotherapy administration and patient monitoring.
Exposure to radiation therapy protocols and treatment delivery.
Client communication, including treatment options, goals-of-care discussions and palliative care.

You will work alongside Dr David Lurie, a dual diplomate in Medical and Radiation Oncology, as well as a senior oncology clinician and our current intern. You will gain valuable exposure to a diverse caseload and the complexities of cancer diagnosis and treatment.

For the right candidate, there is a pathway into a medical oncology residency at the conclusion of the internship.

About you

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic veterinarian who is eager to learn, committed to clinical excellence and passionate about improving the lives of animals with cancer.

You will bring:

A veterinary degree and eligibility for veterinary registration in New South Wales, and at least 12 months of clinical experience
A strong interest in small animal medicine and a genuine desire to pursue veterinary oncology.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to approach sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism.
A commitment to evidence-based medicine, continuous learning and delivering high-quality patient care.
A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong organisational skills, initiative and a willingness to take ownership of your learning and development.
ANZCVS Membership (MANZCVS) in Small Animal Medicine, or an intention to pursue membership, is desirable but not essential.

Previous oncology experience is welcome, but we are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine commitment to developing their skills in this specialised field.
