Fitzroy Vet Hospital is a small animal practice, providing veterinary service at the highest level. With all the usual equipment to support your work, we have also recently opened a separate dental suite. We benefit from a high support staff ratio and a clientele who truly love and value their pets.
Who we are:

- Clinic space: purpose built, open, spacious, 2 theatres, 4 consulting rooms, large waiting area, separate x-ray and prep rooms, dental suite
- Dedicated clients committed to the health of their animals - mixed profile, generally young professionals - for many of which their pets are their fur babies
- We see a lot of geriatric patients who are "regulars" which provides a rewarding opportunity to bond with both the client and their pet; the client profile means that they are willing to investigate, invest in regular monitoring and manage co-morbidities.
- Team profile: generally young group of nurses led by a very experienced and wonderfully positive head nurse. Permanent vets are easy-going in personality and team players - we have lots of informal catchups to discuss cases and collaborate.
- Access to the Veterinary Training Centre (VetPartners) - this is not taken from study leave allowance; 1 week study leave; regular lunch & learns.
Nitty gritty:
- The usual roster is 38 hours split over 4 days (3x 10 hour, 1x 8 hour)- BUT WE ARE FLEXIBLE
- 3-week rotating roster: surgery 4/12 shifts, 1:3 Saturdays (8 hour day)
- The clinic is open 8-6 weekdays and 9-4 Saturdays
- We try to ensure that the vets leave on time and are not too rushed. Appointments usually 20 min for vaccinations, 30 minutes for problem-based consults. Scheduled path time in the day.
- We have biweekly clinic meetings on Thursdays during which the clinic is closed for 2 hours to go through positives of the week and any concerns that staff members may have.
- Coffee and treats regularly provided!

COLLINGWOOD, INNER MELBOURNE - ECC INTERNSHIP 2024
Emergency and Critical Care Internship
The Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency is seeking applicants for their Emergency and Critical Care Internship program in 2024.
About CARE
CARE is a multidisciplinary veterinary specialist and emergency hospital in Collingwood, centrally located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD. It is a busy and progressive hospital with an expanding list of specialists in Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine and Surgery, as well as an excellent, experienced team of emergency veterinarians, nurses and support staff.
CARE has a large range of current, high quality diagnostic equipment, including a new digital radiography suite, Phillips Infiniti and POC ultrasound machines, computed tomography, Surgivet multi-parameter monitors, ventilators, Radiometer blood gas machine, and Idexx in-house laboratory suite including Procyte, Catalyst and Coagulation testing machines.
The Emergency and Critical Care Department is a high-volume service that is genuinely focused on the provision of the ultimate standards of patient care. It is distinguished by a cooperative and supportive approach to case management, both within the department and with the other sections of the hospital. Staff of the department are invested, and take pride, in their contribution to the outcomes of patient treatment.
About the Emergency and Critical Care Internship
This internship program is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in an intensely rewarding and fast paced discipline. It is focused on the provision of clinical exposure, structured mentorship and continuing education to engender confidence, develop clinical competence and serve as an introduction to the academic aspects of emergency and critical care. Beyond this, the role has the potential to open up further opportunities for career progression within the discipline.
The program has a fixed term of 12-months, and is full-time. The majority of the year would be spent within the Emergency Department, but there would also be short rotations through other specialist departments. The internship incorporates a range of benefits, which are included to capitalise on learning opportunities and optimise the value of the program for the intern, including:
- Early active participation in the ECC environment without the immediate pressure of primary case responsibility and a progressive transition to case responsibility based on readiness, and with the support and guidance of assigned mentors. Accordingly, all shifts will be rostered alongside another experienced ECC clinician.
- Active involvement in daily ICU rounds and attendance at regular ECC tutorials
- Rotation through other departments of the hospital, specifically surgery and internal medicine, to further develop the intern’s knowledge and skills in these areas. Additionally, there is access to, and considerable opportunity for, interaction with specialists in all departments on a daily basis. Beyond the obvious benefits, this also often allows for the follow-up of cases beyond the direct involvement of the Emergency Department.
- Mentorship by senior veterinarians and supervision and guidance from our ECC registrar, Dr Christine Lovatt.
- Encouragement, support and provision for preparation for Membership examinations of the Australian and New Zealand College (if eligible) or other post-graduate training opportunities.
- Consistent exposure to a considerable caseload supports familiarity with common presentations and ensures early application of knowledge.
- Professional and social interaction with the intern group within the hospital
- Competitive remuneration including 4 weeks of annual leave and 1 week of study leave for conference or externship attendance.
About our successful internship applicants
The ideal applicant is:
- Eligible for registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria
- A recent or new graduate with a passion for ECC.
- Conscientious and hard-working, with excellent attention to detail
- Someone who shares our strong emphasis on the standard of patient care and optimizing treatment outcomes through thoughtful case management and discussion.
- Comfortable, genuine and effective in their written and verbal communication with clients, referring vets and other hospital staff.
- Engaged and interested to learn from those around them and open to constructive feedback.
- Interested and able to join, and work harmoniously within, a team environment.

MOUNT MARTHA, MORNINGTON PENINSULA - SMALL ANIMAL
I love my job. I love my career. I love being a vet...
How many times have you said this lately?
If your answer is not many then there might be a problem. And if you're searching through job adverts then there probably is a problem.
But what exactly is the problem? Is it money? Is it the hours? Is it the workload? Is it the lack of support?
To be honest it's probably none of these… they are just symptoms of the underlying issue… More than likely you’re conflicted… the reason WHY you became a vet in the first place doesn't match the HOW you are being a vet today.. Your work isn't providing you with your purpose…
I understand this is probably not what you expected in a job advert. Most ads talk about ‘gold standard’ of care and the amazing equipment you get to use. Interestingly, in 20 years of practice I’ve never met anyone who jumps out of bed every morning, raring to go because their clinic has the latest Idexx machine and dental radiography….
Before you leave and read the next ad I (Dr Kelly Halls) would like to tell you about my experience of being a vet. Every day I come to work I get to practise the medicine that I want to practise. I get to look after my patients in a way that not only benefits them but it also benefits me. I get to spend time with an amazing team who love their work too. I get to treat the pets of dedicated owners who really care. I get to have the career that I want. I get to live my dream… And I still love it!!!!
Please click here to see photos!
So my question to you is, do you go to work every day loving what you do? Does it give you purpose?
If the answer is no, then let us help you find that purpose and let you live it every day.

YARRAMBAT/NORTH WARRANDYTE, NORTH-EAST MELBOURNE - MIXED
Full Time mixed animal veterinarian position
The Veterinary Surgery is looking for a mixed animal veterinarian to join The Veterinary Surgery team (Yarrambat & North Warrandyte).
Our clinics comprise of 70% Small, 15% equine, 15% mixed animals.
We are after a mixed animal veterinarian with 4+ years experience who will work well in a large, friendly and supportive team of vets and nurses that provide a high level of care to our patients.
The Position:
• Well-supported position within a great team of 10 vets spread across two clinics
• 4 x 9.5 hour weekday shifts with one rostered weekday off, plus 1 in 4 Saturday morning shifts
• 1 in 7 weeknights on call plus 1 in 7 weekends on call
• 4 weeks annual leave plus one week paid study leave with a further $1500 CPD allowance
• Attractive remuneration
• Large and varied medical and surgical caseload, rarely hampered by financial constraints
• Best suited to a motivated, versatile and progressive vets
• Best suited to vets who will appreciate and contribute to the culture of fun in our workplace, which we regard sacrosanct
• Baking is looked upon fondly
The clinics and the business:
- Main clinic located in Yarrambat, a picturesque and semi-rural suburb approx 45 mins northeast of Melbourne's CBD
- Branch clinic located in Warrandyte, a beautiful village nestled in the green wedge alongside the Yarra River, 40 min east of the CBD
- Independently owned business with two directors who will happily clean cages, and work shoulder to shoulder with the associates
- Both clinics comprehensively equipped with premium diagnostic and monitoring equipment.
Words from one of our Associate Vets:
- We are one of the few clinics where is it possible to live in the "city" and do mixed animal practice
- Our nurses are well-trained to look after us, not over-book and give us enough time for consults, phone calls and catch-ups. Lunchtimes and home-times are considered sacred, and we almost always get out on time. If you want to leave the clinic to go for a walk or pick up lunch at lunchtime, that is almost always possible.
- Doing on-call is an opportunity to serve the local community, to gain unique experience, learn to think on your feet and see some cool cases, but we also have the ability to refer small animal emergencies to 24-hour centres so they can receive the best of care (which also means on-call isn't overly busy)
- As we see such a variety of animals and cases, there is definitely the ability for vets to develop a special interest - anything from alpacas, or equine dentistry, or small animal behaviour. But otherwise, this is an awesome clinic to become a well-rounded mixed animal practitioner, with vets experienced in different areas to provide support and guidance.
- Our large animal work is often for clients who keep a small number of these animals as pets, and so individual diagnostics and treatment are often pursued, but there is also the scope for doing some herd health work if vets are interested
- We have the ability both to work-up and treat complicated cases in-house, and use travelling specialists, but also, we commonly refer and have excellent relationships with specialist centres
- Our clients are generally excellent, usually very respectful and keen to do the best for their animals. As a small independent practice, we have many clients that have been coming to the clinic for decades and value the personalised care we can provide for their animals.
- We are a very casual, friendly, chatty bunch. We work hard but have fun. The radio plays out the back. We often sit and have lunch together. The vet team are very supportive and approachable and share cases and ideas and ask each other for help commonly.
Please contact Jackie at jhall@thevetsurgery.com.au or at the Yarrambat Veterinary Hospital 03 9436 1699 to register your interest or to further discuss the position.

BURWOOD EAST, EASTERN MELBOURNE - SMALL ANIMAL/WELFARE
Are you tired of it all coming down to the money?
Negative client interactions taking a toll on your mental health?
Do you want to get back to your roots and find the passion that drove you to become a vet?
Do you want to be practising high quality surgery and medicine in a way that will make a real impact on the welfare of all creatures, great and small?
One of our veterinarians is taking the opportunity to travel to the UK and an exciting and highly sort after opportunity has arisen to join the Veterinary Team at RSPCA Victoria Burwood Branch.
Life at RSPCA Victoria is varied and exciting. With 34 permanent Veterinarians on staff supported by experienced Nurses and Animal Attendants it’s a little bit like working in the ICU, with less clients, no afterhours and driven by animal welfare. Who could ask for more?
Please click here(YouTube) to see what it’s like being part of our team.
We have a heavy emphasis on CE with Dr Natalie Webster holding monthly imaging rounds, Dr Wing Tip Wong running our Orthopaedic Training Program and weekly rounds and Dr Bruce Parry holding cytology sessions all lined up for this year. We’ve run dental scholarships with Dr David Clarke, have fortnightly medicine/morbidity and mortality rounds and support CPD in areas that interest you. And it doesn’t have to be just cats and dogs; you might find yourself developing a special skill or interest in exotics or explore leadership and mentoring opportunities; the lateral room for career growth is limited only by you.
At RSPCA Victoria euthanasia is only performed when it is in the best interest for the welfare of the patient - we do not euthanase based on resources or capacity. When work up or treatment is beyond our capacity is required, we are supported by external specialists. We have a strong emphasis on team culture, work life balance and mental health. But by far one of the best aspects of working alongside likeminded vets and nurses who are dedicated to speaking up on behalf of the underdogs (and cats, and exotics) of the animal world.

HAMPTON PARK, SOUTH-EAST MELBOURNE - SMALL ANIMAL New Position
Small Animal Veterinarian : Full Time / Part Time
Hi, I’m Dr Cameron and I own Hampton Park Veterinary Hospital.
Ever been stumped trying to answer a question...?
Wracking your brain but coming up with nothing...?
For 28 years I have been solving medical problems for pets on a daily basis but this one question was so difficult to answer.
What was the question that stumped a Vet with 28 years experience...?
“Why should someone work with Dr Cameron and the team at Hampton Park Veterinary Hospital?”
Now I wasn’t stumped because it’s such a terrible place to work but because it was easy to answer the obvious things...
The team...
The clients...
The facilities...
But those things are what I feel every other practice owner seems to say.
What stumped me was being able to truly articulate what makes us unique (we Vets are traditionally very modest!).
So, just like when I get stumped by the answer to a medical puzzle I turned to colleagues, clients and specialists for some insight.
Here is what they said…
“Integrity and honesty underpins all their relationships.”
We pride ourselves on doing the right things the right way for the pets, their owners and those who are part of my team.
“Fairness.”
Everyone client and team member is treated equally and respectfully.
“Compassion.”
Apparently there hasn’t been a day I haven’t gone home talking about the clients and pets that came through the consult room or surgery.
Caring is a verb not an adjective.
“Ambition.”
I have always set myself lofty goals and targets and I love to take others along for the ride and help them to do the same.
“Commitment.”
Even after 28 years I still love to continue to tweak and make improvements to my skills and how we do what we do.
What might you take from this..?
If you join the team I go to bat for you. You will be well supported to achieve the goals you have for yourself and evolve into the best Veterinarian you can be.
If you join the team your voice will count. We are a small but tight knit group where everyone contributes valuably to delivering excellent service.
If you join the team you will be treated well. If there is one thing I have learnt it is to value ourselves as professionals and the skills and service we deliver.
Of course, if you join the team there is the usual stuff I mentioned earlier too…
Not forgetting excellent remuneration based on experience.
If joining a team that is led with these guiding principles as their north star sounds attractive then we should talk.
You will be perfect if...
- You have a few years’ experience under your belt…
- You take pride in doing your very best for yourself, the pet and their owner…
- You are a people person…
- You enjoy the cut and thrust of a GP small animal clinic.
I am really looking for someone who is committed to cementing their career with us. Ideally, the role is full time however, if you are looking for part time work and this resonates I’d be keen to see if we could make it work.
Unlike most other jobs going I’m not going to ask for a CV or a cover letter (well not right away...).
If you are keen to learn more let’s have a no strings attached chat and explore what the future might look like. If it’s something worth exploring further I am sure we will both know it!
Send me an email at cameron@hamptonparkvets.com.au or a text on 0493248187 and we can go from there.

IVANHOE, NORTH-EAST MELBOURNE - SMALL ANIMAL New Position
*********** MELBOURNE, VICTORIA ************
Vet wanted at Ivanhoe Vet Clinic.
Great standard of care for animals (and humans too).
If you’re looking to deliver the best outcomes for your patients, be supported as part of a team, be appreciated by your employer and enjoy exceptional workplace conditions, we’d love you to join us.
We place an extremely high value on our vets – so we pay accordingly (109k-145k pro rata incl super depending on experience/skill set).
You’ll be given the freedom to practice your way, with support available when you need it. We have a culture of learning from each other and look forward to hearing about your special area of interest. An interest in ultrasonography, or a willingness to do further studies in this area, would be well regarded but not essential.
We have 30 minute consultations as standard, don’t place KPIs on our staff and have all the equipment you’d expect and need (and if we don’t, we’ll get it).
We understand that you have a life outside of work so we don’t ask for after hours, we don’t work Sundays or public holidays, and we have a roster for Saturday mornings, 8:30-1pm only. If you need to leave early or start late, just let us know in advance. Our weekday opening hours are 8am to 6pm.
We’re looking for a vet who’ll practice the highest standards of medicine, and share our vision of becoming the best GP clinic in Melbourne.
But enough from us – hear from one of our vets.
Do you leave on time? – Almost always. We’re rostered on for less hours than we’re paid for to make up for anything that keeps you back, but normally I’m walking out the door 10 minutes max after my shift ends.
Professional development – Actually happens. I’m trying to learn extra-capsular cruciate repairs, so the nurses automatically block me out to scrub in when these are booked. No ‘we’re too busy today’– it’s a priority.
Can you refer stuff? – Please do!! We work things up where we can, but we have a culture of asking specialists for advice and refer when needed. No trying to diagnose the weird neuro thing all by yourself – that’s what the specialists are for!
Well paid? – Absolutely.
Support staff – Well trained, efficient, super supportive nurses who are consummate professionals – no tricky politics to navigate here! Each Vet has an assigned nurse each day so you won’t be left scrambling for assistance.
Vets – All experienced, positive vets who are always happy to chat, discuss cases, and generally support you.
The clients – Friendly, supportive clients who want what’s best for their pet. Many are insured. There’s a business manager to deal with any (rare) issues. Any disrespectful clients get shown the doggy door.
Follow-up time – Block this off as you need for call backs or to look things up. Not in the same timeslot as ‘lunch break’ as these are not the same thing.
Lunch breaks – Paid. A priority. Happens daily. Enough said.
If this sounds too good to be true, it’s not! We are expanding our team and are here and hiring.
Interested or even just curious, call Simon for a STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL chat on 0405 413 992 or email me at simon@ivanhoevet.com.au.
In the meantime have a look around the practice and discover who we are by visiting www.ivanhoevet.com.au or find us on
