- Although you may occasionally triage horses, our team includes vets who can take on those cases if equine work isn't your preference.
Professional Development:

Up to Full time maternity cover / Locum Companion Animal Veterinarian in a privately owned practice.
NOTE - We are looking for maternity cover from approx.1st December2024 (or earlier) to February 2026. Ideally, the position is for an average of 30 hours per week, but we are open for an applicant wanting full time work. We would also consider a locum vet wanting to take extended breaks (up to 3 weeks) in the above period to discover New Zealand; as long as peak holiday periods and their weekend shifts are covered.

Within our Companion Animal Hospital, you will be working alongside a range of specialist services, first opinion and emergency veterinarians and interns in New Zealand’s only Veterinary Teaching Hospital facility. We provide 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care for vet clinics throughout the wider Manawatu-Whanganui region in addition to our Community Practice and Referral clinics, which leads to a both challenging and extremely rewarding work environment.
About the role
Our focus is on the delivery of clinical service to clients, support of our rotating interns, and clinical teaching to undergraduate veterinary students.
- Clinical Excellence: Provision of top-tier veterinary services in the medicine department, ensuring exemplary client communication and comprehensive medical care. You may already be a specialist or an experienced veterinarian with a special interest in medicine cases. Specialist support is available both on-site and remotely.
- Educational Impact: Mentor and teach Bachelor of Veterinary Science students, shaping the future of veterinary medicine.
- Collaborative Environment: The medicine team works closely with other areas of the CAH, including Radiology, ECC, Surgery, and Anaesthesia.
- Work/life balance: Most of your work will be regular days Mon-Fri; however, a contribution to the on-call roster to support veterinarians working after-hours is expected.
This permanent full-time (37.54 hrs p/w) role is located at our Vet Teaching Hospital on the Massey campus in Palmerston North.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent, registered (or eligible for registration) as a veterinarian in NZ.
- Boards or board-eligibility preferred; advanced qualifications an advantage. Support will be provided for further study to gain advanced qualifications if applicable.
Excellent communication skills, self-motivation, and a passion for education is a must. This role sits across the Practicing Veterinarian/Senior Practicing Veterinarian range $81,172 - $143,949 with appointment commensurate with skills and experience.

Our clinic is proudly privately owned, and you would be joining two experienced equine colleagues with a third to return in a year; a specialist equine surgeon visits monthly.

Our clientele is varied - racing, sport, and pleasure horses, 90% within 25km of the clinic, we see them all!
We have a high concentration of both Standardbred and Thoroughbred racehorses in the region. This presents an excellent opportunity should the candidate wish to expand the role in this area of expertise.
