OTAUTAU, SOUTHLAND PLAINS - MIXED
New Position
Veterinary Surgeon – Mixed Practice
- Discover the beauty of New Zealand in the ideal lifestyle location surrounded by beautiful beaches and mountains.
- Join our welcoming, collaborative and supportive team with a wealth of experience in veterinary medicine and nursing.
- Committed to a healthy work-life balance and family friendly hours
- Competitive salary plus benefits and relocation package.
Come and join our friendly mixed practice and enjoy a varied and interesting caseload in a community that values and appreciates our knowledge and skills. We are an established practice aiming to provide compassionate care for all of our patients.
The Location
Otautau is a rural town surrounded by the most stunning coastlines and mountains. We have an abundance of outdoor and indoor sporting opportunities, good local shopping and plenty of popular eateries nearby.
Southland is the most cost-effective place to live in New Zealand and offers a multitude of job opportunities for partners making the move with you. Schools and medical resources are of a high standard making it an ideal location for individuals, couples and families.
About Us
Otautau Vets Ltd has provided professional and affordable veterinary care to the Western Southland region for over 20 years. We are an independent practice committed to providing a wide range of high-quality services and sound advice.
We are a genuine mixed practice with around 75% of our work large animal, predominantly dairy, and 25% companion animal. Our varied caseload allows for special interests to be developed and for individuals to grow and expand the services we provide. Southland is home to some of the most progressive and innovative farmers who give us the opportunity for involvement in their business on a more intensive basis. As a result, we have vets trained in InCalf, Healthy Hoof and with interests in dairy nutrition. We provide routine care for local horses, including dentistry and emergency care, with support from the local equine practice when necessary.

With our nearest companion animal referral centre in Christchurch, there is ample opportunity for developing interests in both companion animal medicine and surgery. We also utilise telemedicine referrals where necessary to provide the best medical and surgical options for our patients.
About the Role
Our preference would be for a full-time, experienced veterinary surgeon, but have scope to accommodate a part-time role and/or new graduate.
We are open 8.30am-5.30pm, with no weekend clinics. Our after-hours work is shared with a neighbouring clinic and we strive for a 1:6 roster or better throughout the year; for 10-12 weeks during spring, we cover our own after-hours work and on-call commitments will increase. We have a qualified veterinary nurse on-call over the weekend to assist with emergencies and in-patient care during the busier spring period.
Due to the seasonal nature of our large animal work, there is a huge variation in the weighting of clinical work, but we aim to maintain variation whilst also accommodating individual skills and strengths. We also have large animal technicians to ease the burden of the routine work.
There are always opportunities to learn new skills and with our great team of vets, someone is always happy to lend a hand if more hands, more experience or just some friendly encouragement is required.
A healthy work-life balance is important to us all and we aim to ensure that everyone gets their allocated breaks and finishes on time.
About You
Ultimately, we are looking for the right candidate to fit in with our team. Qualifications are obviously essential, but we are happy to work with differing levels of experience to ensure that you are confident in your role. The qualities that are particularly important to us are:
- Mixed practitioner
- Communication and people skills
- Team player, but able to work independently when required
- Happy to work with a variety of animals
- A good sense of humour!
Our Offer
- A competitive salary that reflects skills, experience and expertise
- Salary review after 3 months employment
- Generous CPD allowance
- Annual Practicing Certificate and professional subscriptions
- Excellent mentoring and support programme
- Relocation package
- Assistance with finding initial accommodation
- Work vehicle for work use
- Long-term opportunities +/- practice ownership for the right candidate.
