Short Part-time Contract- AWLQ Willawong Animal Rehoming Centre

Join us and make a difference!

Are you looking for a rewarding career? Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) is currently looking for a part time Veterinary Nurse (12 month maternity leave contract) to join our Willawong Animal Rehoming Centre in September! If you’re passionate about making a direct impact on animal welfare, we’d love to talk to you.

How you’ll impact our mission

Working in a Rehoming Centre, you will enjoy making a difference to the thousands of stray and homeless animals that come through our doors each year.

AWLQ promises to never euthanize a healthy, sociable or treatable animal in our care, this means we treat a wide variety of conditions on top of routine surgeries and procedures. Our team also gets to see animals they care for adopted in to new loving homes.

About the role

You will be joining a small team who work hard but always have time for a laugh.  There aren’t many quiet days due to the high number of animals needing AWLQ’s help, but on the flip side there’s no weekend work and very little after-hours.

The whole Rehoming Centre works as a team and you will work one-on-one with your vet to facilitate the efficient flow of animals through the clinic so they can go on to find their furever homes.  Your “clients” are the amazing foster carers who take our animals into their homes to provide treatment and a loving home environment while they recover from illness or wait for surgery.

You will liaise with multiple staff, departments and foster carers on a daily basis so strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task are a must. You will have excellent time management and will complete your tasks with a strong attention to detail.  You will be a team player and able to be flexible to the changing needs each work day presents.

Key Responsibilities

What are the minimum requirements for this position?

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Who are we?

Founded in 1959, AWLQ has become a trusted leader in animal welfare. We provide a safe haven and second chance for close to 10,000 stray and homeless animals every year. To each one of these animals we welcome through our doors, a promise is made – to never euthanise a healthy, sociable, or treatable animal in our care. We work tirelessly every day to maintain this promise.

In addition to our shelter work, we are committed to keeping pets and people together by providing lifesaving support and resources to people in need with companion animals. We are known for our grassroots and innovative community-based animal welfare work including our community vet clinics, Getting to Zero, Golden Hearts Seniors’ Support Program and the National Desexing Network.

Why should you join us?

At AWLQ we offer competitive pay and benefits, including access to an independent Employee Assistance Program, continued education opportunities, retail discounts, vet discounts. Most importantly, every day you’ll play an instrumental role in our lifesaving work.

Our mission is to unleash the potential in every team, and we know that teams perform best when they have passion. We are committed to building a culture where everyone has the opportunity to do meaningful work and is recognised for their efforts.

Equity

Diversity and inclusion are the principles guiding how we build our teams, cultivate our leaders and build a culture of belonging where differences are valued.

Join us and make a difference!

Are you looking for a rewarding career? We value our people and the skills, experience, passion, and engagement they bring to the Willawong Rehoming Centre. If you’re passionate about making a direct impact on animal welfare, we’d love to talk to you.

For more information please contact our HR Manager in confidence on 07 5509 9049 or if you’re ready to apply, email your application to hr@awlqld.com.au

Is vet nursing what you LOVE to do?

Ready to feel CHALLENGED to reach your full potential?

Want to do what you love AND be appreciated for your efforts?

Chasing something more? …

Nurses are often expected to hold the animals and wait for their vet…
What if you could be amongst the action and show how capable nurses really can be?
We understand that not everyone loves seeing the same routine procedures every day…
In our hospital you’ll get to see everything on your nursing bucket list!

An opportunity presents…

We all know that clinics run smoother with high nurse to vet ratios...
That's why we have added shifts every day to make sure our patients get the best care possible!

If you are willing to learn then this is something for you!

Why us?

Here’s what one of our nurses has to say about our team…

“When I first started after almost 20 years in the industry, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the nursing team. It didn’t take long to discover that training staff to grow their skill set was a high prior for the management team. They recognized that having well trained staff, working as a valued part of a high performing team, would lead to increased job satisfaction while also setting them apart from others in the industry. There is a confidence building, encouraging approach to learning with plenty of room to advance my skills as a veterinary nurse.

I also enjoy the distinct family approach to patient care from the reception team to the veterinarian and nursing team, everyone works in conjunction to provide a gold standard level of patient care.

The positive, encouraging and inclusive culture that is inspired by an approachable management team and carried throughout the business is the reason I love going to work.”

Nikki Lobwein – Veterinary Nurse

We need you to communicate…
… feedback goes both ways and we want to have an open dialogue to help each other grow.

The role…

OUR STORY

Hello, Kylie here!

I am a full time mum to 3 beautiful girls (aged 7, 5 and 2), part time vet, full time practice owner… and for funsies (and destressing!) I have started my own hobby business on the side.

I have worked at a number of small animal clinics, and was never quite satisfied…

I wanted more!

I wanted to feel I was giving 100% care and support to my clients and patients every time.

I wanted a team I loved and could support, and a team that loved me back and were there to support me too.

Then I met Erica…

Hi, I’m Erica!

I’m not a mum, but I feel like that’s ok for me. I am a full time vet, full time practice owner, a full time sci-fi nerd, and a part time aerialist.

I have always loved my work, even through the ups and downs.

Through working in a few different practices I formed my own view on what I think it means to provide great veterinary care, and what makes a great workplace.

I soon found that Kylie shared my views too!

And so an idea started…

A great friendship turned into a great partnership, so…

In November 2018 we opened the doors to a family owned small animal clinic - North Maclean Family Vet – and haven’t looked back!

OUR CLINIC

As a new clinic, we have all of the usual fantastic modern equipment.

Our clients constantly tell us they love our fresh and clean clinic!

We practice high quality medicine, and will regularly involve in-house specialists in our patient care.

Our mobile cardiologist offers in house workups, preventative screenings and extensive knowledge.

Our mobile internal medicine specialist visits regularly to aid our diagnostic workups, and is always pushing our knowledge and level of care as much as he can! He is a fantastic asset to our team.

Our nursing team is involved in all aspects of our patient care – this includes front of house service, performing nurse consults and team consulting, nursing our in-patients and monitoring our surgical patients and anaesthetics!

We recognise our patients are individuals and treat them as such… our clients really appreciate this!

OUR TEAM

We are a close knit team made up of 3 vets and 5 nurses. Our work family is an extension of our own family. We are supportive of each other whenever possible.

Most importantly, we like to have fun!

Being involved in our local community is really important to us, and we are constantly finding ways that we can give back – we have decided that we will all learn AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) to assist our hearing affected clients.

Sustainability in a world full of many disposables is also important to us, and we all work together to reduce our wastage and recycle wherever we can!

Last year we became involved with B1G1 – we are now regularly involved in giving back to communities/organisations that are important to our team.

We asked our team why they loved working for us, and here is what they said…

“North Maclean Family Vet is an extremely furry friendly and client focused practice. Both Dr Erica and Dr Kylie are exceptional vets with extensive knowledge of clients and patients. I’m so very proud to work here. Every shift is a great shift with plenty of laughs. All the staff are brilliant!”

“I may be biased but it is the best clinic that I have worked in! Also, Dr Kylie and Dr Erica are excellent at hiring the best of the best!”

“I didn’t know it was possible to have work life balance in the veterinary industry until I joined the North Maclean Family Vet team. In my 15+ years in the industry I have never found a clinic to be more in touch with the needs of their clients, patients and very importantly their staff! Joining this team was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I can’t imagine ever working anywhere else.”

“The North Maclean team have done an amazing job at making me feel a part of the team and family. I always look forward to an exciting day at work!”

What we are offering:

A love of sci-fi isn’t a necessity, but it wouldn’t go astray! (Erica would love a new friend!)

OUR LOCATION

We are located in a growing region of southern, suburban Brisbane. We are approximately 50 minutes from Brisbane City, 30 minutes from the Gold Coast and the idyllic Tamborine Mountain, 45 minutes from Ipswich Central, or 20 minutes from Browns Plains. We are easily accessed along the Mount Lindesay Highway, making travel to and from the clinic very easy.

North Maclean is a semi-rural and suburban area, with lots of acreage and several new housing developments. Our clinic is situated in the local village hub, which has the convenience of a fantastic, locally renowned fruit shop. The hub also has a butcher, fish & chip takeaway, bottle-o, chemist, doctor’s clinic, and animal produce store, as well as a bakery that does the best coffee and treats south of Brisbane!
