CURRAJONG, TOWNSVILLE, QLD - SMALL ANIMAL/EMERGENCY New Position
Experienced Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarian
Full-Time | Townsville, QLD | Ongoing Role | Maternity Leave Cover
Are you looking for more than just a job? Maybe you're after a team that genuinely supports one another, a hospital that prioritises staff wellbeing, and a workplace culture built on respect, trust, and growth—not just the occasional pizza lunch.
NQ Care is a brand-new Emergency and Referral Veterinary Hospital that opened its doors in Townsville in January 2025. We’re a passionate group of people driven by the desire to deliver outstanding care to our patients, their people, and our team. Our vision is to create a workplace that’s the preferred place to be—for staff and clients alike—through transparency, continuous learning, and a one-team approach.
We’re on the lookout for a full-time experienced ECC veterinarian to join our team of 10 vets! This position isn’t due to someone leaving—instead, it’s to support our growing team while one of our much-loved senior vets takes maternity leave. As such, we can offer flexibility around the start date. Business is booming and we want to enable our staff to return to work at a pace that suits them, so the role is ongoing and not fixed term.
The Role
You’ll be part of a collaborative ECC team, rotating across a 24/7 roster as well as working in our leadership team. You’ll work alongside a highly experienced nursing team and a supportive group of medical and surgical clinicians who genuinely enjoy teaching, learning, and delivering care together. We hope that this position can contribute to teaching and learning on the floor and support our younger clinicians as they prepare for memberships.
Please click here to see photos!
Who You Are
You're an experienced ECC vet who thrives in a fast-paced emergency environment. You're calm under pressure, curious about cases, and genuinely love working as part of a team.
What we’re looking for:
- A genuine interest in emergency and critical care
- Excellent communication skills—with both referring vets and your internal team
- Strong clinical reasoning and case management ability
- Genuine commitment to supporting colleagues and working collaboratively
- Excitement to work on the cases no one saw coming (and no skin/ear consults in sight)
Essential Requirements:
- BVSc or equivalent, registrable in Queensland
- Queensland radiation license
- 5+ years post-grad veterinary experience (we’ll consider less for exceptional candidates)
- ECC experience and MANZCVS (ECC preferred)
Why Join NQ Care?
We’re a young hospital built by people who’ve worked in the trenches and want to do things differently. We’re transparent with our staff, actively seek feedback, and invest in our team’s success—because when our people thrive, so do our patients.
We offer:
- $140–180k + super (depending on experience, competencies, and further qualifications)
- Ongoing CPD support and paid study leave
- Paid parental leave
- A leadership team who backs you and invests in your growth

- Opportunities to shape your career—clinical or non-clinical pathways available
- Scrubs you might enjoy wearing (hello Figs!)
- Culture celebration days (with more than just cake and a paper crown)
Interested?

MALVERN, INNER SOUTH ADELAIDE SA - ECC
Brand New Hospital Opening early October 2025
Emergency Veterinarian
Positions Available – Full-Time, Part-Time, and Casual
Help Us Redefine Emergency Veterinary Medicine
We started Nexus Emergency Vet Hospital because we knew there had to be a better way. After years in ECC, we found ourselves frustrated by flawed systems; systems that remove pets from their families at the worst moments, surprise clients with unexpected bills, burn out brilliant vets, and stall careers for lack of support or opportunity. Too often, there wasn’t time to pursue clinical interests or grow into leadership. Too often, we heard: “This is just how it’s done.”
We created Nexus to fix what’s broken – to honour the human-animal bond, to support clinicians as people, and to prove that exceptional medicine and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. The only way to do that? Get a group of like-minded ER vets together and rebuild it from the ground up.
If this resonates with you and you’re ready to do things differently—we’d love to meet.
Why Nexus?
- You Help Shape the Future: We’re a dynamic start-up, and your voice matters. From protocols to policies to culture—you’re part of building it all.
- Real Work-Life Balance: Flexible rosters and fair caseloads, and uncapped, unpaid leave for those who want to invest in travel, study, or personal priorities.
- Career Growth Without Limits: Whether your passion lies in mentorship, medical leadership, clinical excellence, or innovation, we’ll support your vision. We’re actively creating space for future roles that don’t exist in most hospitals.
- Specialist Support That’s Actually Supportive: 24/7 telemedicine access to critical care specialists who are dedicated to guiding you, not managing their own caseload.
- High-Quality Medicine, Backed by Innovation: Think mobile nano-tube radiology, Apple-based workflows, and a hospital built to enhance transparency and efficiency.
- Culture First, Always: We’re family-owned, values-driven, and believe that if the hospital thrives, so should the people in it.
Salary & Benefits
- Pay range: $128,000–$179,000/year based on experience and skillset
- Superannuation paid in addition to hourly rate
- Structured growth opportunities—we’ll work with you to develop a personalised professional development plan and support you in reaching higher pay tiers as your skills and goals evolve
- $2,500 annual CPD allowance with additional training supported when aligned with your career goals and our shared growth at Nexus.
- Uncapped, unpaid leave, subject to approval—we support time away for personal goals, family, study, or travel
Your Responsibilities Will Include:
- Provide high-quality emergency and critical care across a wide range of cases
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with pet owners, especially in emotionally charged situations
- Collaborate with your team and contribute to clinical and operational decision-making
- Mentor junior staff and students when appropriate
- Maintain accurate medical records and follow evidence-based practices
Who We’re Looking For
We’re seeking experienced ECC veterinarians who are ready to do things differently. You’ll be part of our founding clinical team and help set the tone for high-quality, compassionate, and sustainable emergency care.
This is for you if:
- You’ve worked in ER and felt the system wasn’t built for pets, their families, or their vets, and you want to help fix it
- You believe in transparency, honesty, and trust with clients
- You thrive in a collaborative team and bring others along with you
- You’re excited about shaping the future of emergency medicine, and growing with us
Qualifications
- Veterinary degree registrable in South Australia
- Minimum 1 year of emergency experience, or equivalent (e.g. internship-trained)
- Strong clinical and diagnostic skills
- Memberships or advanced training are a bonus (and rewarded)
