The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is a not for profit organisation providing veterinary services to private and shelter animals in the Geelong region. The organisation has a long and proud history having serviced the local community since 1956.

The role of veterinarian is an integral position at GAWS, providing support to the Head Vet, and contributing to the organisation’s ability to maintain its sustainability as an animal welfare establishment.

The role functions in a busy clinic, is diverse and involved in the provision of veterinary services to both in-house shelter animals and private clients with a focus on companion animals. Building relationships with the local community and rapport with clients, both internal and external, is integral to the role.

Our clinic operates Mon-Fri 9am-4.30pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. The vet practice has 4 vets each combining private practice with shelter medicine. The position can be part-time or full-time. A flexible work arrangement on hours of work is available and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Experience & Skills
To be considered you must be able to demonstrate:

An appropriate degree qualification, clinical experience and registration with an appropriate Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board.
A team focus with excellent communication and relationship building skills.
Strong customer service focus with ability to formulate suitable outcomes.
Depending on your level of experience the ability to work effectively and independently with access to supervision where required,
Intermediate level of competency with Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and preparedness to learn systems including sheltermate and customer logic.

Though not essential, the following would be beneficial:

Experience in a not-for-profit organisation, open admission animal shelter or animal welfare organisation.
A mindset that recognises working in an animal welfare charity.

The successful applicant for this position will be required to undergo a pre-employment Police Check, will need to possess a valid driver’s license and provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia.

About Our Team
Every day at Benetook Vet Clinic is different and there is a lot of fun to be had as part of this thriving practice.

We have a large team of qualified and enthusiastic vet practitioners and nurses who are there to support you during and after business hours.

Salary and Hours

MILDURA, NORTH-WEST - MIXED, SMALL ANIMAL ONLY WELCOME

Mildura Veterinary Hospital is a large, purpose-built practice within easy walking distance of the city centre in Mildura, VIC.

We are an independent, family-owned practice of 9 vets (8 FTE and 1 part-time) and are looking to expand our team – we would consider taking on up to FOUR new vets for the right applicants (three years ago we did just this – see our facebook page for details of the ‘fab four’).

We are a mostly small-animal practice, with the occasional large animal, and as such would be happy to take on EITHER a mixed animal veterinarian, OR a small animal only veterinarian.

Mildura is situated on the beautiful Murray River and is a 4 hour drive from Adelaide, and a 6 hour drive from Melbourne, and there are daily flights available also.

We are an AVA new graduate friendly practice, but all levels of experience welcome to apply, with salary negotiable (depending on experience).

The practice premises have recently undergone extensive renovations, with more to come in the immediate future. Currently we have 4 dedicated consulting rooms, a grooming room, a dedicated grieving/quiet room, separate dog and cat wards, separate large brand new isolation ward, a large separate sterile surgery with dual tables, separate radiology/ultrasound room, and large central treatment room with a wet table, and dual treatment/minor surgical tables.

We are very proud of our roster and working conditions which are very flexible. Most of our vets choose to work a 7 day per fortnight cycle (FTE – weekdays only, as we are closed on weekends) but this is negotiable and candidates are welcome to work shorter shifts Mon-Fri to make up FTE hours if this is preferable. Our emphasis is on an attractive and sustainable work life balance and for this reason, individual preferences and needs are always taken into account in all aspects of our practice. Time off is highly valued, and it is almost never a ‘no’ when a request for time away from the practice is made, whether this be for annual leave or other reasons.

We strive to provide a highly supportive environment for all staff – you will never be sole charge – one of the many benefits of being part of a large team. After hours is flexible and is shared evenly, and remuneration is excellent: up to 90% of professional fees are paid for work undertaken. Additionally, an RDO is accrued for every weekend covered on call. Support from one of the senior vets is always available, day or night. In addition, we use an external triage service for after hours calls which has reduced the number of calls by around 70%.

Our wonderful team of nurses are all either Certificate 4 qualified, or are currently enrolled in study. Our nurses are not just glorified cleaners, but rather play an active role in patient care and veterinary support – you can rely on them to monitor and report on your inpatients, ensure treatment schedules are carried out, take blood and urine samples and run diagnostics as requested, place IV catheters, set up for and assist with all procedures, and to provide continuous monitoring of your patients through surgery and into recovery, with dedicated one-on-one nurse-to-patient care ratio. Our two head nurses are not only cert 4 qualified but also each have their Diploma in general practice, and are currently undertaking further study.

Our aim is to to provide our patients and clients with the highest standards of veterinary care and attention achievable in general practice. We have a team oriented approach to our cases, and tackle a wide variety of medical and surgical challenges. We have a dedicated hospital nurse each day.

Referral is always offered to our clients for difficult cases, but being four hours from the nearest capital city means we have a unique opportunity to perform a variety of surgical procedures. We set a premium on pain management, preventative health care, and early behavioural modification, with puppy preschool courses run on site.

Special interests are encouraged, and continued education is highly valued with generous course and conference expenses covered by the practice.

One of the current practice principals has a special interest in soft tissue surgery, and performs a reasonable amount of brachycephalic surgery including airway, skin fold, and screw tail surgery.

Dr Ian Japp, the previous practice principal, still works with us on a casual basis, coming in for orthopaedic surgeries as needed. An applicant with an interest in orthopaedics would, therefore, be supported and encouraged!

We are a supportive and social team and hold get togethers both inside and outside of work hours. We hold regular staff meetings, which are fully catered for by the practice.

Employment package includes:

Salary well above Award: starting at $90,000 (plus super) for a new graduate, and higher for an experienced (1+years) vet.
Relocation expenses covered, up to $5,000.
Practice vehicle (Toyota Rav 4) available for the first six months, if needed.
Furnished accommodation rent-free for the first 3 months, if needed.
VSB Registration, VIN subscription, CVE membership, AVA membership, and radiation licence fees all covered by the practice for the first year.

Job Description

We run a full time team-based consulting model. Our nurses are the first point of contact for ALL consultations. Nurses educate clients on the general health measures such as parasite control, diet, vaccination status and triage the clients concerns prior to the vet seeing the patient. Team based consulting allows the veterinarian to use their unique skills by freeing them up from these repetitive simple tasks. It provides our clients a more thorough experience and increased perception of value, maximizes job satisfaction for nursing staff and provides better balance for our veterinarians.

Hours

Our shifts are structured with a 6-6:30am/pm vet with additional consulting vets supporting.

Pay

GARS is a multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital staffed 24/7 with onsite specialists in surgery and internal medicine, supported by specialists in oncology and diagnostic imaging, residents, interns, reception and nursing staff.

Position details

Rotating internship, gaining valuable clinical experience in surgery, internal medicine, ECC and diagnostic imaging over a 12-month period
Mentorship, training, support and guidance provided by a dynamic group of Specialists (2 Surgeons, 2 Internal medicine specialists, 2 ECC specialists and a specialist Veterinary radiologist) and a supportive team of nursing staff.
Guidance and support provided for applications to Residency programs, both within GARS and external institutions.

The clinic boasts all the mod cons including DR radiography and portable CR radiography, a MyLabX5 Ultrasound, in-house lab, full IM3 dental base with IM3 dental radiography, and endoscopy including video otoscope and flexible endoscopes including an equine bronchoscope and several smaller scopes.

We are one of the few clinics where is it possible to live in the "city" and do mixed animal practice
Our nurses are well-trained to look after us, not over-book and give us enough time for consults, phone calls and catch-ups. Lunchtimes and home-times are considered sacred, and we almost always get out on time. If you want to leave the clinic to go for a walk or pick up lunch at lunchtime, that is almost always possible.
Doing on-call is an opportunity to serve the local community, to gain unique experience, learn to think on your feet and see some cool cases, but we also have the ability to refer small animal emergencies to 24-hour centres so they can receive the best of care (which also means on-call isn't overly busy)
As we see such a variety of animals and cases, there is definitely the ability for vets to develop a special interest - anything from alpacas, or equine dentistry, or small animal behaviour. But otherwise, this is an awesome clinic to become a well-rounded mixed animal practitioner, with vets experienced in different areas to provide support and guidance.
Our large animal work is often for clients who keep a small number of these animals as pets, and so individual diagnostics and treatment are often pursued, but there is also the scope for doing some herd health work if vets are interested
We have the ability both to work-up and treat complicated cases in-house, and use travelling specialists, but also, we commonly refer and have excellent relationships with specialist centres
Our clients are generally excellent, usually very respectful and keen to do the best for their animals. As a small independent practice, we have many clients that have been coming to the clinic for decades and value the personalised care we can provide for their animals.
We are a very casual, friendly, chatty bunch. We work hard but have fun. The radio plays out the back. We often sit and have lunch together. The vet team are very supportive and approachable and share cases and ideas and ask each other for help commonly.

MANGALORE, SHIRE OF STRATHBOGIE - EQUINE New Position

Yulong Stud has a position within the veterinary team of our business. Working alongside our four resident vets, you will cover all aspects of a thoroughbred stud.

Yulong is a growing thoroughbred stud based in Nagambie, Victoria. Spread over 3,000 acres and across four adjoining properties, Yulong currently has seven resident stallions and 700 broodmares with over 350 foals to yearlings. Consigning yearlings at all major sales throughout Australia, and a racing team of 200 plus horses gives the veterinarians great job variety and exposure to all aspects of the business.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and organised person who wishes to be part of a close-knit veterinary team as well as learning the structure and management of a thoroughbred stud. As we are currently in the development phase of two of the additional stud properties, you would be involved with input into set up and design of vet working areas within these properties.

The chosen candidate would be joining an established veterinary practice with two veterinary nurses and stud support staff. The veterinary team is a very friendly group with a strong passion to provide excellent patient care while still pursuing a good work life balance. With support from the other resident vets, you will share the on-call roster with the option of having four-day weeks in the months of May, June and July.

Yulong’s veterinary facilities include a full lab comprised of hematology, chemistry and blood gas machines along with the ability to do cultures and sensitivities. We also have portable ultrasound, digital radiograph and video endoscope machines. Additionally, our practice has strong relationships with nearby equine referral hospitals and therefore referral and additional support from internal medicine specialist, surgeons and theriogenologists is also available.

Reproduction would be the main focus during the breeding season and being proficient with scanning mares pre and post service, mid-trimester placental scans, pregnancy testing and twin ablation is essential. The ideal candidate will also have prior experience with emergency stud work, foal medicine, yearling endoscopy, and radiography as well as racehorse lameness. However, a veterinarian with less experience in the latter areas will still be considered as mentorship from the senior stud veterinarians will be available. We would encourage you to attend seminars and clinics to further your education in all fields of veterinary work and the company will provide financial support for this.

You would have the opportunity to attend yearling sales to oversee the veterinary care of our yearling draft whilst on the sale complex. As well as assisting management with yearling inspections and completing thorough pre purchase clinical examinations, reading pre-sale x-rays and evaluating pre-sale upper airway endoscopy videos.

We currently have a staff of 100 and the ability to effectively communicate as well as assist with ongoing education of the stud staff is vitally important to the growth of the business.

The breeding side of the operation is located the beautiful wine region of the lower Goulburn Valley. We are located a quick 1.5-hour drive or train ride into central Melbourne. A fifth property, Yulong Park, serves as the spelling farm for our racehorses and is located on the opposite side of Melbourne and is only a short drive away from the Mornington Peninsula.

Requirements:

Degree in Veterinary Medicine/Science eligible for full veterinary registration in Victoria
A candidate who has completed an equine internship will be given preference but is not essential

There’s lots of stuff here… All the things you need (schools, daycare, kindergarten, pharmacy, café, supermarket, dental and doctors clinics all in the shopping centre next door to the clinic), plus there is lots of fun stuff too (snowfields, beaches, hundreds of sporting clubs across a huge variety of sports, the iconic Gippsland Lakes, all within stone throw from the clinic).

Whilst we are a mixed general practice we provide a wide range of companion animal and equine services, we currently provide limited farm animal services due to time constraints. We would be happy to accommodate smallies only vets, smallies equine vets very comfortably and welcome anyone with and interest in farm animal practice, but it would take time to grow the caseload in this area. Pay and all conditions are negotiable and are a minimum of 20% above award (for an experienced vet equivalent of $150K per annum for PFT plus after hours). No afterhours work is required and a variety of shifts/hours are available as we have business hours that allow us to cater to varying client schedules. We provide a high level of medicine during our practice hours and collaborate with referral centres to share more complex cases that require options beyond our scope.

BANNOCKBURN, NORTH-WEST OF GEELONG - MIXED

Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic are seeking an enthusiastic veterinarian to join our busy and modern 7 vet, 11 nurse practice located 15 minutes from Geelong, 35 minutes from the surf coast, and 1 hour from Melbourne. Our purpose-built clinic is located in a semi-rural area on 1 hectare and has a mixed workload of 75% small animals, 10% horses and 15% cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas and wildlife.

We service a large number of dedicated pet owners including small animal breeders, greyhound trainers and animal rescue centres, as well as horse, cattle, sheep and alpaca studs. As a member of our team you will be exposed to all aspects of small and large animal care. We have amazing clients who love their animals and are generally happy to do all they can for them, which makes our job easier, more interesting and allows full medical and surgical workups of cases.

Our clinic is fully equipped with everything necessary to provide a high level of medical, surgical and reproductive care for both small and large animals. This includes;

Portable Digital X-ray (including digital dental X-ray)
IM3 Dental Machine
Ultrasound, (small animal and equine)
In-house Idexx Pathology machines, Coag Machine, Sedivue
Large and small endoscope
Purpose built equine/large animal facility with stables, inbuilt crush and padded recovery room.
Visiting specialists- both medicine and orthopaedic surgeons. We also have good relationships with the specialist centres in Geelong and Melbourne whom we can call for advice.

We are a down to earth group who aspire to provide a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment for our staff. Members of our team are encouraged to develop and follow their own areas of interests, while our experienced veterinarians aim to be supportive mentors to help and guide younger staff. Our fun and energetic nursing team are always willing to provide outstanding care to our patients.

We do not provide an after hours service, with patients being referred to the Geelong After Hours Centre.

Hours are flexible with at least 1 day off during the week, with roster including a Saturday morning clinic once every 5-6 weeks. You will additionally have a long weekend off after you have worked a Saturday morning clinic. This will allow plenty of time to enjoy everything that the Geelong region has to offer. We offer above award wages commensurate with experience, 4 weeks’ annual leave and 1-week study leave with paid course fees. (Membership fees).
