GRIFFITH, INNER SOUTH CANBERRA - SMALL ANIMAL New Position
Small Animal Veterinarian - New Graduate or Experienced
Hi Superstars!
Manuka Veterinary Hospital has undergone a renovation and, drumroll…(ok, we are on Kookaburra Vets so not a huge surprise, however, Jazz hands)….. we are excited and eager to embrace someone new into our close-knit team, extending a warm invitation to join us in our mission, to Care with Kindness!
So why Manuka you may ask? Check this out:
Our Team
WARNING: There must be something in the water here! Why? Because two of our gorgeous vets are going on maternity leave within weeks of each other in late June! Both will be back in the fold soon enough, and, with the renovations complete, Manuka will be able to accommodate everyone. This is a 2nd baby for one of the vets and 1st baby for the other, we are so proud of them!
But what does that mean for you? It means you still have 3 amazing vets, each with over 12 years’ experience, to mentor you every day! Why did our last two vets leave a few years ago….due to retirement! People love to stay with us (and we love them back!) and we had to expand the clinic to accommodate everyone!
The clinic owner is also an ACT Veterinary Practitioner Board member and can give unique and invaluable mentorship around legislation and complaints. Our vets are superstars in surgery, medicine and consulting skills. We have a senior team with a love for clinical work, staying up to date and delivering the very best bespoke care and are keen to mentor a newer grad, or work together with another senior vet. We are super collaborative.
Our Clients
Our clientele are not just lovely, they are seriously the best clients in Canberra. We have clients that align with our way of practicing, which is for us to be an integral part of the health care team for their pets. Our clients are keen to embrace all that modern medicine and surgery has to offer as well as being focused on preventative health and treatment to ensure their loved ones live the best life ever.
Our Clinic
We are an independently owned clinic, with 2 owners who work at Manuka. One of the owners also part owns other clinics in Canberra, which is how Manuka has become part of the Capital Paws Group (CPG). The CPG is an all privately owned cooperative of practices. It is a unique situation where a collective of like-minded independent clinics pool resources creating a wide network of vets with different special interest areas who are always keen to help. We have sonographers, surgeons, behaviourists, dentists, medicine gurus, a rabbit vet and reptile enthusiasts, among others. We also now have a specialist surgeon working with us at one of the other practices. Whatever your question or interest there is someone to talk to. We have regular social and continuing education catch ups, and the level of collegiality is second to none.
Our group is encouraging and supportive of continuing education, and skills development. We have a generous continuing education allowance and support anyone that wants to study distance education courses or for their memberships.
The CPG is also connected with a charitable organisation called The Canberra Mob who deliver animal health programs in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. If you are interested, there are opportunities to contribute in this area of our profession as well.
If you are a new graduate, we have an internal 12-month program to upskill you and allow you to mingle with your peers. This includes and one day off a month to learn, new skills, lunch time rounds with the other new grads, and internal mentor and other support to get started in your first job.
Because we are independent with the owner working alongside you, you can have conversations and know that the owner is listening. This means that change can take place at the clinic level and that your voice will be heard.
We are also growing our next generation of leaders and business owners. With a collective of eleven clinics, there are many possibilities to “cross pollinate” skills and develop or pursue and interest in practice ownership. Many of the newer directors in the practice started out working within the CPG before capitalising on an opportunity to embrace practice ownership.
We are open on Saturday mornings, but the rest of the weekend is our own. On our normal full-time roster we all have a regular weekday off. Management is really flexible though and if you have only specific hours you can work, please get in touch and discuss it with us.
What about the bells and whistles?
Manuka is delightfully well equipped with in house DR radiography, dental radiography, a great ultrasound machine (and in-house sonographer) and tonometry as some of our many handy tools. There are lots - too many to list.
What about the after hours? No after hours!
We're so lucky in Canberra to have two overnight and weekend emergency centres, and the specialist centre just down the road from us. Out of hours we know our patients are in good hands.
Why the Canberra region?
Canberra is honestly an undiscovered gem of a place to live. There is so much culture and beautiful outdoor space. As the capital, and home of all the embassies, the vibe is much more cosmopolitan than you might expect for a city of this size. We are conveniently located 2 hours from the Snowy Mountains and South Coast, and it is honestly so easy to dash to other places, such as Sydney, for a visit. The climate is beautiful and the air is fresh. You can get anywhere in town in under an hour! Coming with a family? This is an excellent city to raise kids. There are so many things to do (and if you join us, you're welcome to ask me about them!) Coming as a new grad? This is a lively city full of young professionals.
Who should apply?
If you are a small animal vet with a love of providing high quality care, and this ad speaks to you, we would love to hear from you. Whether you are a new grad or an experienced hand, I am sure you will appreciate our warm and supportive environment. Please note, we only look after dogs and cats, if you love the feathered or scaley, contact me and I can help you find your people!
We are committed to providing support and mentoring for our new grads, and generally being an encouraging team for all staff across the group.

- For full-timers we pay for a 38hour week, but we generally only roster and work an average of 35-36hrs per week.
- You get the same day off every week
- Shifts are 8 or 9 hours in length - either 7.30am-3.30pm, 9am-5pm or 9.30-6.30pm
- Saturdays are 1-weekend-in-3, from 8am- 1pm and are never sole charge.
- Half hour consultations
- Twice daily rounds with the entire team
- VIN membership and CVE membership paid for by the practice
- Your ACT radiology licence is paid for by the practice
- A high ratio of trained nurses to vets
- Special interests will be supported
- Generous CPD allowance and 1 week study leave
- Free parking
- Many team activities such as the annual Brudine Bake-off, an in-house weekly newsletter, Pilates as well as regular dinners and other activities around Canberra.
- Salary is, of course, significantly above the award, with wages being reflective of your skills and commensurate with experience.
If you are looking for full-time, or part-time work we are happy to accommodate your needs. We are a family friendly practice and there is NO after-hours work or sole charge. We provide a supportive and encouraging environment. Senior vets are always available to discuss cases and provide back-up where needed.
Our main requirement for the new team member is that they are people (as well as animal) focused so they can deliver an amazing client service from start to finish. In return you will benefit from our experienced vets, who love discussing cases and bouncing ideas off each other. We have passionate surgeons; exotics vets; vets enthusiastic about ultrasonography and behaviour, and a vet with radiology memberships. We see a diverse range of medical and surgical cases (including orthopedics such as TPLO’s) and are happy to support you to gain extra skills or to explore your passions. If you would like to join a balanced and progressive team then we really want to talk to you.
We provide a comprehensive service for our fabulous clients and their much loved furred and feathered family member. We love what we do, foster a supportive team dynamic, and have a strong, loyal client base who are like family. We have all the equipment you would expect of a modern and constantly updating practice.

Our hospital is in Canberra - a city constantly updating and evolving into one of the most live-able cities in the world. Previous Sydney dwellers have joined us and love the new lifestyle they have chosen here in Canberra. Come and speak to them, see our fabulous Hospital and meet the friendly team. We can also arrange for you to talk to one of our other vets if you wish and are happy for you to come and work a trial day or two at locum rates if you would like to get a feel for our team and how we work.
Here is some feedback from Ailsa, who recently took a Locum position with us:
‘I completed a month long locum veterinary surgeon position at Brudine vets in September/October 2023. I have completed multiple different locum positions at practices throughout Australia so far and Brudine has been my favourite for sure! The whole team was super friendly and they went above and beyond to make me feel part of the practice, even as a casual member of staff. It was a very supportive environment and there was always someone available to ask questions of or discuss cases with. The nursing team was great too, and always on hand to help with that tricky/uncooperative patient! The practice was busy enough to always have something to get stuck into, but it never felt unmanageable. There was a good balance of consulting and surgical shifts on each weeks roster which I really enjoyed. I overall couldn’t recommend working at Brudine vets enough, and really hope I have a chance to join the team again at some point!’.
If you really want to continue your career in a caring, supportive environment with room to develop your own interests then please send your CV and letter of interest to manager@brudinevet.com.au or phone 02 6258 1668 and speak to Dr Fiona or Dr Gwen.
