Do you love the challenge of surgery while enjoying good banter with the nurses?
And are you passionate about building loyal and trusting relationships with your clients?
Then we have the right job for you!
Our proudly independent small animal clinic located in the inner-west of Melbourne was founded in 2005 on the ethos of valuing all pets as members of the family. Interns will also be trained in performing diagnostic procedures such as radiography, CT and MRI. The commencement of the program is currently flexible, ideally prior to January 2025.
The surgery intern’s responsibilities and activities support the efficient and effective management of cases presented to the Surgery Department both as primary referrals and via the emergency service. In this role, the intern works cooperatively with, and under supervision of the surgical specialists, registrar and resident. This affords a considerable opportunity for clinical and professional development with exposure to a wide range of surgical cases and is intended to foster the intern’s interest in further learning and facilitate their progression to advanced clinical training in the discipline. This will require a balanced approach to capitalising on learning opportunities and attendance to clinical duties, requiring initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm in both aspects of this role.
Specifically, the regular duties of the surgery intern include:
- Assistance with admission of patients to, and discharge from, the hospital
- Organisation and preparation for anaesthesia of surgical patients
- Induction of anaesthesia and supervision of anaesthetic monitoring by surgical nurses
- Providing assistance to, and guidance of, the surgical nurses in the preparation of patients for surgery and performing adjunctive analgesic procedures
- Scrubbed assistance in surgery
- Supervision and management of patient recovery, as monitored by the surgical nurse
- Review of patient treatment/hospital charts
- Brief evening rounds with the responsible ICU clinician to transfer case responsibility overnight
- Assistance with diagnostic imaging investigations including radiographs, CT and MRI (external facility) examinations after appropriate training and licensing requirements have been met
- Preparation of surgical reports relating to procedures that the intern has been involved in as the assistant surge
- Thorough examination, assessment and care of any hospitalised surgery patients (including cooperation with the surgery nurse in performing any ancillary tasks).
- Preparation of daily inpatient records for hospitalised surgery patients
- Timely and comprehensive reporting to the specialists on the condition of their inpatients.
- Communication with clients and referring veterinarians on behalf of the surgeons when requested.
- The surgical intern is not required to contribute to the on-call roster although there is the potential for the intern to participate in rostered in-patient care on Saturday mornings.
- Participation in, and contribution to, weekly surgery rounds/journal club sessions
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria and have excellent communication skills and work ethic, as well as a strong knowledge base on which to build
- Clinical experience is desirable but not essential
- This position is suited to a highly motivated vet seeking to further their skills and knowledge in Small Animal Surgery
- Team coherence is extremely important to us and above all, we value someone who is a team player and an active learner

We do our rosters 4 weeks in advance for 3 month blocks so the position can suit someone who has jobs elsewhere/locum work etc… and wants to forward plan their lives. Whilst we are looking for someone to work every Monday, the long term rostering allows for flexibility as well.
About us:
Maribyrnong is open 7 days per week, whilst Avondale Heights is open 5 weekdays and 3 hours on a Saturday morning. The nurses at both practices are highly skilled and routinely take bloods, place catheters, perform radiographs, write clinical notes etc… Nearly all staff rotate between the 2 practices. PMS is Customerlogic which is super user friendly; we have DR xray, CR dental, capnographs, bear huggers, dental base, bp, inhouse path, and great referral services locally as well as visiting medical consultants and specialist surgeons on an approximate weekly visiting basis. A dedicated off-site Vet looks after our HR, and external payroll takes care of all things wage related.

The position description applicant requirements:
- Monday afternoons are typically a consulting shift with 4-5 nurses working until 7pm.

HAMPTON PARK, SOUTH EAST MELBOURNE - SMALL ANIMAL
Hi, I’m Dr Cameron and I own Hampton Park Veterinary Hospital.
Ever been stumped trying to answer a question…?
Wracking your brain but coming up with nothing…?
For 28 years I have been solving medical problems for pets on a daily basis but this one question was so difficult to answer.
What was the question that stumped a Vet with 28 years experience…?
“Why should someone work with Dr Cameron and the team at Hampton Park Veterinary Hospital?”
Now I wasn’t stumped because it’s such a terrible place to work but because it was easy to answer the obvious things…
The team…
The clients…
The facilities…
But those things are what I feel every other practice owner seems to say.
What stumped me was being able to truly articulate what makes us unique (we Vets are traditionally very modest!).
So, just like when I get stumped by the answer to a medical puzzle I turned to colleagues, clients and specialists for some insight.
Here is what they said…
“Integrity and honesty underpins all their relationships.”
We pride ourselves on doing the right things the right way for the pets, their owners and those who are part of my team
“Fairness.”
Everyone client and team member is treated equally and respectfully.
“Compassion.”
Apparently there hasn’t been a day I haven’t gone home talking about the clients and pets that came through the consult room or surgery.
Caring is a verb not an adjective.
“Ambition.”
I have always set myself lofty goals and targets and I love to take others along for the ride and help them to do the same.
“Commitment.”
Even after 28 years I still love to continue to tweak and make improvements to my skills and how we do what we do.
What might you take from this..?
If you join the team I go to bat for you. You will be well supported to achieve the goals you have for yourself and evolve into the best Veterinarian you can be.
If you join the team your voice will count. We are a small but tight knit group where everyone contributes valuably to delivering excellent service.
If you join the team you will be treated well. If there is one thing I have learnt it is to value ourselves as professionals and the skills and service we deliver.
Of course, if you join the team there is the usual stuff I mentioned earlier too…
Not forgetting excellent remuneration based on experience.
If joining a team that is led with these guiding principles as their north star sounds attractive then we should talk.
You will be perfect if…
- You have a few years’ experience, so you know your way around a consult room…
- You take pride in doing your very best for yourself, the pet and their owner…
- You are a people person…
- You enjoy the cut and thrust of a GP small animal clinic.
I am really looking for someone who is committed to cementing their career with us.
The good news is that you will be able to do this AND work part time. It is a role suited to you if you are keen for 20 to 25 hours per week.
We are pretty flexible with how this works although it requires a regular Saturday morning shift.
Unlike most other jobs going I’m not going to ask for a CV or a cover letter (well not right away…).
If you are keen to learn more let’s have a no strings attached chat and explore what the future might look like. If it’s something worth exploring further I am sure we will both know it!
Send me an email at cameron@hamptonparkvets.com.au or a text on 0493 248 187 and we can go from there.
