JCU Vet is offering 12-month internship positions for proactive, focused veterinarians who want to build their knowledge and clinical skills. Whether you are a recent graduate or an experienced veterinarian seeking further training, we have opportunities for you.

JCU Vet is the Clinical Small Animal Teaching Hospital for James Cook University in Townsville. Our team is composed of specialists, membered veterinarians, general veterinarians, interns, Cert IV veterinary nurses, a radiographer, trainee nurses, animal nursing assistants, and veterinary receptionists. Together, we make up a large and diverse team of over 80 professionals.

Our internships focus on practical skill development that you can apply in your future career. Successful candidates will be involved in all areas of our teaching hospital, including emergency/critical care (ECC). Unlike many other internships, you have the option to develop your consulting and case management skills with short blocks in general practice, while still having access to the support and guidance of experienced clinicians and specialists.

We understand the concerns interns have regarding weekly hours. At JCU Vet, interns will work an average of 38 hours per week, with additional learning and training opportunities available both within and outside of these hours.

These exciting opportunities will commence in January 2025 for a 12-month period.

SYDNEY NORTH SHORE - CRITICALIST

Criticalist

Our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) department is excited to offer the opportunity of a full-time ECC Consultant to join our purpose-built hospital.

The Hospital

North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre is one of multiple hospitals in the VetPartners group that has multiple hospitals and clinics throughout Australia. As such there is high out of hours caseload which feeds the ECC referral team. The referral hospital is multidisciplinary with referral services in surgery and internal medicine.

Our services include:

The team here are a fantastic group of people – with many celebrating work anniversaries this year of over ten years and multiple vets coming back after specialist training or staying on after training here. As a busy referral hospital, you would have access to the expected tools – dedicated ICU, multiple mechanical ventilators (for tick time here!), ultrasound, CT, MRI (as of Feb 2022), TEG, interventional radiology and a blood bank. On-site there is the VetPartners Training Centre for use and we have a good network with the local practices.

About you

The successful applicant would ideally be ACVECC or ECVECC board-certified. However, candidates eligible to sit the qualifying examinations for these colleges will also be considered as would fellows of the ANZCVS.

The role

The ECC department in this hospital is growing significantly and you would join a team currently consisting of one other board-certified Criticalist, 1-3 ECC interns, rotating interns and multiple ECC-specific nurses.

+ The Role
As an ECC Veterinarian, you will provide general and critical care management of the in-hospital patients, provide emergency and critical care to patients that present to BVSC, and provide other non-specialist veterinary services under the direct supervision of Specialists.

Our hospital hours are 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday and our business partner, BVECCS, looks after the night shifts, weekends and public holidays.

The role's hours are 7.30am – 6.30pm, this can be a full-time or part-time position - we are flexible and open to discussion. There will also be a weekend on-call roster requirement of 1 in 6 weekends to act as a scrub assistant for the primary on-call surgeon.

Our hospital is well equipped with digital radiography, two Philips ultrasounds, ECG, multi-slice CT scanner, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, radioactive iodine, endoscopy, 24hr Holter monitor, new Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator and access to high field 3T MRI.

NSVSC is looking for an enthusiastic Veterinarian with at least one year of experience to join our Emergency and Critical Care team for an internship.

This is a unique opportunity for motivated Veterinarians with an interest in pursuing further ECC training or who intend to sit memberships. In this position you will work directly with a Criticalist and be supported to provide care to our most critical patients. You will be guided to perform procedures and work with machines not commonly encountered in general practice.

Through the course of the year, you will have the opportunity to participate in teaching through journal club and intern specific lectures and book club. You will also be supported to sit your memberships (if appropriate) and the RECOVER initiative CPR training.

What SEV is looking for or What Do We Need From You

Your Role Is?

As an Emergency and Critical Care Vet at SEV, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care in a dynamic and supportive environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Emergency Response: Responding promptly to emergency cases that come in during the night/after-hours which will include the spectrum of emergency cases from snakebites, tick and other toxicity’s, trauma/fractures/stitch-ups, emergency laparotomy’s, GIT and repro emergencies, and other medical emergencies. It will also include providing overnight care to existing medical and surgical patients from surrounding general practitioners that need supervision overnight and will be returned the following morning.
  2. Critical Care: Providing intensive monitoring and treatment to critically ill patients, including those recovering from surgery or suffering from severe medical conditions.
  3. Diagnostic Expertise: Triaging and applying through examinations and appropriate diagnostics for critical care treatment of each patient within our care.
  4. Surgical Interventions: Performing emergency surgeries when necessary, such as wound repair, laparotomy’s, C Sections etc.
  5. Client Communication: Effectively and respectfully communicating with pet owners regarding their pet's condition, treatment options, prognosis, and any concerns they may have.
  6. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintaining accurate medical records and documenting all treatments, observations, and communications relating to patient care.
  7. Continuous Learning: Candidates are expected to be up to date with their continuing Veterinary education.
  8. Team Support: Vets are expected to provide mentorship and guidance to all support staff working overnight shifts, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment. Encouraging a happy and healthy working environment.
  9. Sanitation and Organisation: Ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of work areas, including examination rooms, surgical suites, and treatment areas, to prevent the spread of infections, promote a safe environment for both patients and staff, and support efficient workflow during emergency situations.

About the hospital
ARH Brisbane, a specialist and emergency hospital at Sinnamon Park in Brisbane’s west, opened 7 years ago and has grown steadily since. Our purpose-designed, state of the art hospital offers 24/7 emergency and critical care services as well as internal medicine, small animal surgery, neurology and medical and surgical oncology. Facilities include a new dedicated critical care unit, in-house diagnostic laboratory, ultrasound, digital radiography, CT and MRI scanners and endoscopy. Equipment includes two ICU ventilators, high-flow nasal oxygen, ABL Flex 90 Blood gas analyzer, EZ-IO, MILA chest drains and PICC lines.

About the internship
Interns work under the guidance of a critical care specialist and experienced emergency vets assisted by experienced nursing staff. Interns also have close involvement with our other professional services. Interns are expected to participate in daily rounds and weekly journal club or case presentations. They are encouraged, if eligible, to work towards completion of the ANZCVS ECC membership examination and/or peer reviewed publication within the year.

This internship offers an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated, hardworking, experienced and professional individual to work and learn in a busy and supportive referral hospital. Previous ARH interns have continued on to residency positions worldwide. The position includes 4 weeks of annual leave, 1 week of study leave with a CE allowance and paid overtime.

Requirements
Candidates must be eligible for veterinary registration in QLD, hold a current radiation license, and have excellent communication skills and work ethic as well as a strong knowledge base on which to build. Clinical experience is essential.

The internship will commence in February 2025 and is for 12 months with an option to extend to 18 months. The Emergency Vet Position:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and team-oriented Emergency Vet to join our 24hr Emergency team in Adelaide in either casual, permanent, fixed term, full time or part time capacity. You will work in a multidisciplinary setting alongside colleagues in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Dermatology and Neurology, while receiving direct support and in-house training from our Emergency and Critical Care Specialist Dr Nicole Kalnins and Registrar Dr Morgan Woodforde. There will be opportunities to collaborate with departments across the extensive network of SASH in NSW.

Emergency surgeries will be part of this role. However, our experienced surgeons are on call 24 hours a day to support you, so you will never be asked to cut something you are not comfortable with! As we offer 24-hour care, shifts rotate between days, overnights and weekends. Public holidays and weekends are shared equally on a rotating basis.

Emergency Veterinarian

Harvest Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital (HVSEH) in Hong Kong is seeking emergency veterinarians to run our bustling 24/7 Emergency department. The successful candidate will work within a brand new, 25,000sq. ft., state-of-the-art specialist referral centre. The emergency department is located on the ground floor with an adjacent intensive care unit (ICU) and specialized isolation wards, the departments are overseen by a Diplomate of the American College of Emergency and Critical Care. The purpose for built ICU provides patient with a comfortable environment to rest and recover, providing services for advanced respiratory support in the forms of high-flow oxygen therapy and invasive mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal therapies, and advanced WIFI-enabled monitoring equipment with central monitoring. The specialist services boast the following technologies: a 1.5T GE Signa Explorer MRI, 16-slice GE Discovery PET-CT, Newtom 5G XL CBCT, GE 9" OEC Elite II fluoroscopy, digital radiography, and multiple modern ultrasound consoles from GE, Samsung, and Esaote.

We have a dedicated international team of diplomates in anaesthesiology, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, emergency and critical care, oncology, and surgery, with additional specialist services currently under recruitment. We have an exclusive focus on specialty and emergency care, with no primary care services within the hospital. We value work-life balance, collaboration, and ethics in our facility. The role will not require being on call or having on-call responsibilities.

Our Surgical Service:
This position has been developed to ensure we continue to provide a high level of surgery across a wide and varied caseload. Our GP Centres provide routine surgery 5 days per week and our ECC Centre provides advanced and urgent surgery 24hrs a day.

This position will also provide the applicant the opportunity to gain mentorship, training, support, and guidance from a travelling Specialist Surgeon, who works from our Centre one week in four.

Expand your knowledge with access to more advanced surgical cases whilst still building a solid foundation in GP and ECC cases. This position will assist our Management team, Veterinary Directors and Lead Vets to oversee and build and develop the Surgical services within our Practice.

Working under the guidance of our ECC Specialist, Team Leader and Senior Clinician, your roster will enable you to work closely with senior clinicians and specialists to further develop your skills and knowledge. Once comfortable, you would progress to hospital shifts with an increase in caseload management.

We have carefully structured this role to balance day, night and swing shifts on a lifestyle roster which provides ample diversity, and with input from our team. Shifts involve a combination of hospital and consulting shifts. Recovery time is factored in, and this leaves plenty of time for family, friends and exploring the great outdoors in this extraordinary part of Australia!

Townsville is perfectly positioned within relative proximity to Cairns and the Whitsundays and a short flight to southern cities.
