Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, a landlocked country in Southeast Asia bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar. Located along the banks of the Mekong River near the Thai border, Vientiane is the political, cultural, and economic centre of the country. Unlike the bustling capitals of its neighbours, Vientiane offers a laid-back atmosphere with a blend of French colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, and traditional Lao culture. One of its most iconic landmarks is Pha That Luang, a golden stupa that symbolizes both Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. Visitors can explore serene temples such as Wat Si Saket, enjoy riverside views, and sample local cuisine influenced by Thai, Vietnamese, and French flavours. As Laos continues to open up to tourism and development, Vientiane is slowly modernizing while maintaining its tranquil charm. Though smaller and quieter than other regional capitals, it offers a unique introduction to Lao life and heritage. The official language is Lao, and while English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas, a few basic phrases in the local language can enhance the experience. Vientiane is accessible by road, air, and rail, including a high-speed train connecting it with northern Laos and China.
