Otautau is a small farming, forestry and milling town located inland on the western edge of the Southland Plains of New Zealand on the banks of the Aparima River. Otautau is located approximately 40 km north west of Invercargill.

Otautau began as a wagon stop on the Riverton–Wakatipu gold diggings route, in the 1860s and 1870s. Sawmills once processed timber from the Longwood Range, and the township has long served the local farms.

Otautau offers excellent fishing and hunting facilities with the nearby Aparima River, Longwood Hills and numerous other lakes, rivers and mountain ranges within a short distance.

This small rural community has a wide variety of sporting groups and facilities available including golf, squash, indoor/outdoor bowls, rugby, netball, tennis, a solar heated swimming pool and a very modern sports complex.
