Dungog Shire, foothills of the Barrington Tops, is a popular tourist destination for day trippers and short break stays. It is only one-hour drive from Newcastle, two and half hours from the heart of Sydney and 45 minutes to the foothills of Barrington Tops World Heritage National Park. Tourism and agriculture are the focus of this area, which is is renowned for its forests, mountains and picturesque river villages.
Clarence Town is in Dungog Shire on the mouth of the Williams River, which branches from the Hunter River.
