Cairns is a popular travel destination for tourists because of its tropical climate and proximity to many attractions. It is considered the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and northwest of Cairns lies the Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation both popular areas for experiencing a tropical rainforest. It is also a starting point for people wanting to explore Cooktown, Cape York Peninsula, and the Atherton Tableland.

Of the 150,000 people who call Cairns home, many are from different backgrounds, both indigenous Australian and from overseas. The region is truly multicultural and has one of the oldest intact surviving Indigenous communities in the world - the Kuku Yalanji.

With its perfect (if somewhat warm) balmy climate, laid back atmosphere, friendly locals and beautiful scenery, some might think that Cairns and the surrounding region is a tropical paradise.
