Richmond is located at the base of the Blue Mountains, 65kms north west of the Sydney CBD. The expansion of the Sydney suburban area has almost reached Richmond and it is now considered to be an outer suburb of Sydney. Bells Line of Road which leads into, over and across the Blue Mountains, finishing in Lithgow, starts in Richmond. Richmond is surrounded by the 329 km2 Richmond Woodlands Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of the importance of the patches of remnant eucalypt woodland it contains for endangered regent honeyeaters and swift parrots.

Richmond is one of the earliest European settlements in Australia and was selected for its rich alluvial Hawksbury flats around 1811 and consequently, in 1891, became the site of the Hawkesbury Agricultural College. Today the appeal of the town lies largely in the exploration of its numerous historic buildings.
