Maryborough is a city and a suburb in the Fraser Coast Region and is just three hours from Brisbane QLD.
The historical town of Maryborough is a must visit with the striking art, statues, heritage buildings, memorials and museums that tell a story of a town that was once one of Australia’s largest port. Maryborough was one of Queensland’s industrial powerhouses in the final decade of the 19th century, producing naval ships, sugar milling equipment and railway rolling stock.
A short stroll through heritage-listed Queens Park leads to Cheery Tree Lane and a statue of Mary Poppins perched beside the 135-year-old bank building where her creator, Pamela Lyndon Travers, was born in 1889. The world’s most famous nanny typifies the heritage charm and creative talents that rock the cradle of modern life in Maryborough.
In the historic Wharf St Precinct is Australia’s finest military museum outside of Canberra. Across the street a tippler tells tales of tasting the liquor content of kegs at the old Bond Store; the Customs House Museum faces the street where 22,000 immigrants trudged from berthed sailing ships, taking their first steps on the new land they would call home.
