Austinmer is a northern village of Wollongong on the south coast of NSW, in the northern Illawarra region.
Austinmer Beach is one of Wollongong's most popular beaches, located just 25 minutes north of the central business district. The relatively small beach is wedged between two low headlands and their extensive rock platforms.
Fifty years ago Austinmer was one of the many coastal coal mining villages which lay to the north of Wollongong. With the decline of coal in the area and the arrival of a regular train service to Sydney, it quickly acquired a certain chic charm. Commuters decided it was within their price range and still close enough to Sydney. Today it is the most popular beach north of Thirroul.
