Armidale Stud, Carrick TAS 
Armidale Stud is seeking a locum veterinarian for maternity cover from mid May to end of July (11 weeks).
Covering the quieter winter months, this temporary position offers the opportunity to experience life as a stud vet, without the long hours and stress of a stud season.
Armidale Stud has been in operation since 1964, sustainably farming 1000 acres for 4 generations. This family-operated stud prides itself on being Tasmania’s largest and leading Thoroughbred stud. Serving 3 residential stallions and foaling down 100 foals down each year. These foals are grown out on fertile pastures and evidence-based balanced diets to feature in both local and intrastate sales.
Armidale stud also offers racehorse spelling facilities, thus often providing care to over 300 horses on farm.
Furthermore, our current residential vet, also provides veterinary services to several thoroughbred trainers and performs official race day duties at Launceston and Longford racetracks.
During the time of maternity cover, most of the caseload will be racing stable visits, as routine stud work is minimal.
Armidale Stud is located in Carrick, Tasmania, a short 15 minute drive to Launceston. North Tasmania offers world-class wineries, restaurants, beaches and hiking trails. With a temperate climate and beautiful landscapes, it offers a standard of living, few places can compete with.
Role responsibilities:
- On stud management of the health and welfare of foals, weanlings, yearlings, mares, stallion and spelling racehorses.
- Limited reproductive scanning, compromising of placental scanning for problematic mares.
- On-call for emergencies on farm and on selected thoroughbred racing stables. Stud staff and TB racing clients are very respectful and skilled. Will only call if absolutely necessary.
- Race day duties at one meeting and up to 6 trials days during the advertised period of cover.
- Racehorse lameness and poor performance work ups.
Candidate Qualities:
- Degree in Veterinary Science/Medicine that allows full qualification to work in Tasmania, Australia
- Minimum 3 years equine experience.
- Competency with thoroughbred poor performance and lameness work ups.
- Driver’s license
